====================

A. The Kidney Patient's Book
----------------------------
This book is by Timothy P. Ahlstrom. It includes information on kidney
disease, dialysis, transplants, and nutritional therapy.

B. National Kidney Foundation, Inc.
-----------------------------------
Check the white pages for your state office. Ask for information on
diabetes and kidney disease. They have several informative pamphlets
and booklets. Their publications include The Kidney; American Journal
of Kidney Diseases; patient and public education materials; CNSW
(newsletter); CNSW Perspectives; CRN Quarterly; CNNT Action Update.

C. National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse
----------------------------------------------
The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC) is a service of
the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases,
part of the National Institutes of Health, under the U.S. Public Health
Service. The clearinghouse, authorized by Congres in 1978, provides
information about diabetes to people with diabetes and their families,
health care professionals, and the public. NDIC answers inquiries;
develops, reviews, and distributes publications; and works closely with
professional and patient organizations and government agencies to
coordinate resources about diabetes.

In addition to many excellent resources on general diabetes topics,
the clearinghouse offers information on diabetic kidney disease. Also
ask for their bibliography called "Low Protein Diets and Diabetes."
Most publications are free of charge.

II. Online Resources
--------------------

A. Usenet newsgroup
-------------------
The newsgroup is called alt.support.kidney-failure. This newsgroup is
apparently *not* gated to e-mail. I don't have access to this newsgroup.
However, a friend of mine sends me an occasional post from there, and
these posts have been very informative.

B. RENALNET
-----------
RENALNET is a forum for patients who have ESRD or CRF. The URL for the
RENALNET WWW page is:
     <http://ns.gamewood.net//renalnet.html>
The specific starting point for the forum is:
     <http://ns.gamewood.net/cgi-bin/uncgi/conf/pick>.
You can also access RENALNET via gopher at
     <gopher://ns.gamewood.net/11/renalnet>
and via telnet at
     <telnet://renal@199.0.155.2:0>.
There is also direct dialup access at 804-685-4890.

C. Dialysis List
----------------
To subscribe to the dialysis list, send an e-mail message to

     listproc@mail.wustl.edu

Leave the subject line blank and type this in the body of the message:

     subscribe DIALYSIS Your Name

D. Transplant List
------------------
The transplant list includes posts about all types of transplants,
including kidney transplants and kidney/pancreas transplants. It is a
support group that also posts a lot of solid information and discusses
controversial issues. Traffic is moderate. The list offers good FAQ
files. To subscribe, send the following command to
LISTSERV@WUVMD.WUSTL.EDU or LISTSERV@WUVMD.BITNET via email:

      SUB TRNSPLNT Your Full Name

   where "Your Full Name" is your name. For example:

      SUB TRNSPLNT Billy Rubin
