*A word about GATEWAY COMPUTER purchases*
Recently Gateway has begun selling computers at retail stores such as
Best Buy, Circuit City, and Staples. It is important to note that if a
Gateway computer is purchased from a retail store Lehigh cannot provide
any type of hardware support for it. In the event of a hardware problem
individuals will need to contact the store where they purchased it from
for assistance. Lehigh can only provide hardware support for computers
ordered directly from Gateway's web site or over the phone. For more
information, contact the Help Desk (8-4357) or your computer consultant.

*LTS Help Desk Knowledge Base: Now Available!*
The new Help Desk knowledge base can now be viewed and searched at
http://helpdesk.cc.lehigh.edu/helpme.html or via the Help Desk homepage
at http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk

The knowledge base contains about 250 of the most common computing and
library questions and answers. Still early in the stages of development,
the database developers need your feedback and comments. Send comments
to helpdesk@lehigh.edu <mailto:helpdesk@lehigh.edu>

*7 Steps to Saving Trees!*
Lehigh University students at the public computing sites around campus
use a tremendous amount of paper - over 6 million sheets annually. Even
though LTS buys recycled paper, it's a big hit on the environment and
the budget. Here are some tips for minimizing the impact and abiding by
University policy with regard to printing:

1. Utilize the default setting for duplexing (printing both sides of a
sheet).
2. Do not print multiple copies or use the printers for non-academic
purposes - it's not a copy machine.
3. If your print job doesn't show up immediately, do NOT resend it -
wait a bit and investigate the cause of the delay. Check the default
printer configuration on the computer to be sure it is indeed the one
where you are expecting your job to print.
4. Avoid reprinting entire documents when making small changes.
5. Browse content of library materials for relevance to your research
before printing lengthy articles.
6. Save your syllabus and other course materials in your notebook rather
than printing it over and over again from Blackboard.
7. Write documents with single or 1.5 spacing rather than double spacing.

*Change to graduate student video loan policy*
Graduate students now have identical video loan privileges to those of
faculty. Videos may be borrowed for one week, with one renewal, provided
that no other user has placed a request. Good news! Fines are no longer
assessed on overdue videos. However, replacement costs are assessed
after one month, with library privileges blocked. If you are teaching a
course, and wish students to individually view a video, the best
approach is to place the item on reserve in the Media Center.
