*LTS E-newsletter Debuts; Anyone can Subscribe*
LTS Connection, the Library and Technology Services' newsletter, joined
Lehigh University's burgeoning world of electronic publications with the
first (September) issue of the 2005-2006 academic year. The newsletter
is sent automatically to all faculty and staff. Anyone else, inside or
outside the campus, can subscribe by going to www.lehigheconnection.org
<http://www.lehigheconnection.org/> and registering their email address.
One tremendous advantage to the web-based electronic format is that
readers can click right onto the many LTS web sites that are referenced
in the newsletter. One more issue will also be distributed in print as
well as electronically and then, with the first 2006 issue, it will be
"e-only" like many of the scholarly journals students and faculty know
and love.

*ELECTRONIC NEWSPAPER RESOURCES*
The library recently acquired a new electronic subscription service,
America's Newspapers
<http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=169>, to
compliment our other newspaper access points. This product, produced by
Newsbank, offers the full text content of over 650 U.S. newspapers, 140
of which are exclusively available from this service. Some of these
exclusive titles include the Philadelphia Inquirer (1981-), the Los
Angeles Times (1985-) and the Chicago Tribune (1985-). Other database
services which provide extensive newspaper coverage include our
subscriptions to Lexis-Nexis Academic
<http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=88> and Factiva
<http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=91>. The
remarkable New York Times Historical
<http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=136> database
offers full-text images of NYT articles back to 1851. Another new
subscription that will be of interest to historians, African American
Newspapers, the 19th Century,
<http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=174> offers
online access to the complete text of the 7 major African-American
newspapers published in the United States during the 19th century. A
number of library guides can help identify our other newspaper holdings,
for instance see: Newspaper Resources at Lehigh Libraries
<http://www.lehigh.edu/library/infodome/NewspaperResources.htm> and
Current Lehigh Newspaper Subscriptions
<http://www.lehigh.edu/library/infodome/valsnewspapers.htm>.

*DIGITAL MEDIA Studio Opens, Posts Extended Hours*
The Digital Media Studio is now open for business. It has its own
entrance from the breezeway on the south (Packer Avenue) side of
Fairchild Library. The Studio replaces and enhances the Media Production
facility formerly housed in Linderman Library, and includes:

a 15 seat training facility for faculty and students
a professional video, photography, and VR studio
state-of-the art editing software for production of audio and video
material.

The Studio's Lab section now offers greatly extended hours compared to
the old Media Production facility: Monday-Thursday, 8am to 11pm; Friday,
8am to 5pm; Saturday, noon-5pm; and Sunday, noon-10pm.

*Attachment disorders (in email, that is...)*
Occasionally someone calls the LTS help desk because he/she has received
an email attachment that can't be opened. The attachment is named
winmail.dat. This problem occurs occasionally and is Microsoft-related.
The sender is likely using Microsoft Outlook and/or works at an
institution running a Microsoft Exchange server, and the products are
not optimally configured. There are several ways to solve this problem
at both the receiving end and the sending end. All are described in the
following document. Read on...
http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/email-guide/winmail.htm

*FREE ALTERNATIVE TO ADOBE ACROBAT*
Lehigh has a site license for Adobe Acrobat PDF Writer, but it's only
available when connected on-campus to the Lehigh network. PDF995 is a
suitable, free alternative that's ideal for users who want to create
PDFs whether they're connected to the network or not. Instructions for
installing and using PDF995 are available here:
http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/teams/cbe/pdf995.htm

*Sharpening text using the ClearType feature (XP only)*
In Windows XP, you can dramatically improve the sharpness of text by
simply turning on a hidden feature called "ClearType." Just right-click
on the desktop and select "Properties." Then, select the tab called
"Appearance" and press the "Effects ..." button. Check the box "Use the
following method to smooth edges of screen fonts," and select
"ClearType" in the drop-down list. Click "OK," then "Apply" and then
"OK" again to close the Properties window. ClearType works especially
well at sharpening text on LCD monitors set at their native resolution,
but it also can help in some cases on old-fashioned CRT screens.

*NEW TELEPHONE FEATURES*
Library & Technology Services is pleased to announce the availability of
two new telephone features: *69 and *67.

*69 Last Number Redial - allows you to press *69 to redial the last
incoming call to your phone.

*67 Caller ID Block -allows you to block your outgoing caller ID on a
call-by-call basis. (Note that internal, on-campus caller ID cannot be
blocked.)
