*LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO STUDY?*
The Johnson Dining Room and the Grace Lounge on the 2nd floor in the
University Center are now open for study Monday through Thursday nights
from 8 pm to midnight. Baker's Junction is now open until 11 pm Monday
through Wednesday nights so it's easy to take a break and get coffee or
a snack.

*Scientific Publishing Conference*
Library and Technology Services and the Lehigh University chapter of
Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, are co-sponsoring a
conference on Saturday, November 12th titled "Scientific Publishing:
What does the future hold?" Experts from Elsevier, SPARC, Cornell, the
American Mathematical Association., the Lehigh Libraries and Sigma Xi
will discuss new directions and critical issues. Attendance is free but
attendees should pre-register. This can be done online by choosing Fall
Conference at http://www.lehigh.edu/scipub

*LINK, DON'T SCAN YOUR BLACKBOARD COURSE READINGS!*
Lehigh Links via SFX is the preferred way to provide online course
readings. Lehigh Links creates a URL (specific web address) for journal
articles and other library-licensed electronic materials. Lehigh Links
works beautifully for both on and off campus readers. For instructions
and more examples see
http://www.lehigh.edu/library/infolit/lehighlinks.html . For help with
Lehigh Links, contact your Client Services Librarian or Instructional
Technologist.

Lehigh Links may be used for multiple semesters within fair use
guidelines. Using the "capture the bibliographic citation and URL"
feature, an online course reading may be created. The Lehigh Links
creates a menu that links the student to the library's licensed copy on
the publisher's server. Using Lehigh Links eliminates the laborious
scanning process, saves enormous space on our Blackboard server, and,
most importantly, avoids any issues with copyright/fair use.

Lehigh Links via SFX creates lasting links. Even if the availability of
a particular article shifts from ProQuest to JStor, for example, the
course link will still work. Lehigh Links may be used in any web
context: in an e-mail to a student, a discussion board or blog, or in
Blackboard.

*GET A ROOM! ON THE CAMPUS CALENDAR*
The Campus Calendar now offers enhanced search capabilities, making it
easier to find locations of events, to see what events are scheduled for
a particular location, confirm existing reservations, and other useful
scheduling information. Some searching tips for the calendar are at:
http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/calendar.htm

*PRINT SELECT TOOL*
As we continue to make more "self-service" tools available to our
clients, Library and Technology Services is proud to announce our new
Web Print Select tool. By visiting http://www.lehigh.edu/printers users
can effortlessly install campus networked printers. Any questions
regarding Web Print Select should be directed to the Help Desk or your
department's Computing Consultant.

*MOZILLA FIREFOX*
Library and Technology Services has published an introductory guide to
using Mozilla Firefox, a standalone web browser often coupled with
Mozilla's standalone email client, Thunderbird. The Firefox guide is
available at http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/firefox/seminar.html
and includes a link to "Customizing and Using Thunderbird."

*CLICKERS (THIS IS NOT YOUR TV REMOTE!)*
Interested in an innovative way to elicit feedback from a group? Want to
enliven group meetings and focus groups? Consider using "Clickers"!
Clickers (a.k.a. audience response units) are small remote control
devices with various buttons that participants use to respond to
questions. Used in conjunction with a Powerpoint presentation, the
clickers allow each person to respond to a displayed question by pushing
on the button that corresponds with their answer. The votes are tallied
by Powerpoint, and if desired, can be displayed real-time in various
graph formats so everyone can see how the group responded.

The ability to collect anonymous feedback from a group makes this tool
useful for a variety of situations. One recent use included collecting
feedback from a group of alumni who had come to campus to participate in
a focus group. The use of the clickers engaged everyone in the group in
responding to the various questions that were posed, and allowed even
the most timid participants the opportunity to share their perspective.

For more information on using the clickers or to schedule a
demonstration, contact Sherri Yerk-Zwickl at shy2@lehigh.edu.
