*DISPOSAL OF LEHIGH OWNED COMPUTER EQUIPMENT*
New procedures have been implemented in order to ensure the integrity of
University data as University-owned computers are relocated or otherwise
disposed of, as well as to ensure that obsolete computers are disposed
of in an environmentally appropriate manner. This document, "Procedure
for the Disposal or Relocation of Computer Equipment" can be found on
the Security web page or directly at:
http://www.lehigh.edu/security/DisposalProcedures.html

Topics covered in this document include:
1. Data Removal and Cleanup
2. IntraCampus Relocation
3. Computer Hardware Resale
4. Computer Hardware Donations
5. Computer Hardware Disposal Procedure

Questions pertaining to this procedure can be directed to the Business
Manager of your department.

*"BLAZE" - Lehigh's New Linux Beowulf Cluster*
Thanks to a recent NSF grant awarded to Terry Delph (Mechanical
Engineering) and Jeff Rickman (Materials Science) and Jim Gunton
(Physics), Lehigh University recently acquired a second Linux Beowulf
cluster named BLAZE. A Linux Beowulf cluster is essentially a group of
personal computers linked together using network cards and cables and
managed by special Linux cluster management software. This technology
can be used to perform complex parallel computing tasks at a fraction of
the cost of traditional multi-processor computers.

The new Beowulf cluster contains a total of 120, 64 bit AMD Opteron
processors and contains 2 gigabytes of RAM (Random Access Memory) per
node. It is currently being configured and tested and will be made
available for general use in March. BLAZE will utilize the same usage
fee structure as the current Beowulf cluster (Fire) which is $250 per
account per year.

BLAZE is located in the Llibrary and Technology Services (LTS) computer
room and is being administered by LTS programmers and Client Services
staff. If you have any questions regarding opening an account on BLAZE
please contact Terry McGinley at tam5@lehigh.edu
<mailto:tam5@lehigh.edu>. If you need more information please contact
Paul Ryan at pfr2@lehigh.edu <mailto:pfr2@lehigh.edu>

*Lehigh Library's Proxy Server Changing as of March 2005*
Library and Technology Services has initiated a new access method for
subscription services that allows off-campus users to link to them
directly with merely a Lehigh user account ID/login. Users no longer
need to set up a Proxy in their browsers. People who have already done
so should remove the Lehigh proxy from their browsers because this
identifies them as being at Lehigh and may cause service denials at
other sites. Examples are internet-based vendors or employers who use IP
authorization to retrieve account information. In addition, when the old
system is deactivated in March 2005, your browser may stop working
temporarily until the proxy setting is corrected. For more details,
please see http://www.lehigh.edu/library/guides/proxyremoval/noproxy.html

*UPDATED LINDERMAN PROJECT WEBSITE*
The Linderman Library Project web site at www.lehigh.edu/lts/linderman
<http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/linderman> has recently been reorganized and
updated. It includes many details about how library services will be
provided during the 2 summers and 3 semesters that Linderman Library is
closed for renovation. It also has the most recent renderings of some
key spaces.

*REFERENCE REORGANIZATION IN FAIR-MART LIBRARY*
Most periodical indexes are now online, accessible through the library
Databases page (http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/). As part of the
ongoing reorganization of print materials, indexes that are wholly
available online, such as Chemical Abstracts, have been moved to
storage. A small number of print indexes that are still currently
received or that have valuable backfiles that are not available
electronically remain on the first floor of Fairchild-Martindale Library
and have been integrated by call number into the general Reference
collection. There is no longer a separate "Index Section".

*Books and Journals: Location, location, location*
To find locations of books and journals, please visit this link. This
link will be updated as locations change.
http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/locations/liblocations.html

For more information about materials and their locations during the
Linderman Library renovation, contact the help desk at 8-4357.

*SOFTWARE LIBRARIES TO BE CONSOLIDATED IN EWFM 8B*
The two software libraries presently on the lower level of the Fairchild
Computing Center will be combined permanently in room 281 on the
mezzanine level sometime in early March.

*INTERNET FRAUD AND IDENTITY THEFT*
Phishing (a hacker-defined term from the word fishing) has become an
increasingly popular way to try and get you to divulge personal or
financial information over the Internet. Don't take the bait! See
http://www.lehigh.edu/security/phishing.html to learn how to identify
phishing incidents and avoid becoming a victim.

*KEEPING ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE TOOLS UP-TO-DATE*
Antivirus software and spyware removal tools help keep your computer
secure, but these programs are only as good as the last time they were
updated. Be sure that Norton is set to update its definition files every
day (not just weekly, the default setting). Configuration instructions
are available at:
https://www.lehigh.edu/security/norton/docs/liveupdate.htm
If you use the spyware removal tool Spybot Search & Destroy, be sure to
periodically check for updates. Open Spybot and click the Search for
Updates button. Place a checkmark next to each update you want and then
click Download Updates. Each time you check for updates, you should also
re-immunize your system. (Click the Immunize button on the left margin,
then click the green Immunize button at the top of the menu). Run full
disk scans if either program hasn't been updated for a long period of time.
If you need Norton Antivirus, visit
https://www.lehigh.edu/security/norton/ to download Lehigh's
site-licensed copy. Instructions for downloading, installing and using
Spybot are available at
http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/spyware/spybotinstall.html

*SHOWING FOLDER SIZES IN NETSCAPE 7.X AND MOZILLA 1.X*
If you exceed your mail quota and need to free up space, or are just
trying to clean up your mail and don't know where to start, Netscape and
Mozilla have a "Show size" option that calculates each folder's total
size. Using this option lets you target folders consuming the most
space, usually due to large attachments. To see folder totals, click the
square icon with a down arrow at the top of your mail folders list, and
choose Size. Folders in the hundreds of KB or over 1MB are the largest
folders, so you should start cleaning there first.

*IMP TIPS*
Many Netscape and Mozilla users append a signature file to their
outgoing email. This file usually contains name, title, address and
phone information identifying you to the message recipient. The same can
be done for users of web-based IMP mail (http://www.lehigh.edu/imp). In
IMP, click Options > Personal Information > Edit your Identities. Choose
Default Identity from the drop-down menu. Compose a signature as you'd
like it to appear, then click the Change button.

IMP users may notice that outgoing messages do not appear in their
normal Sent folder on the mail server, and thus, cannot be viewed in
either Netscape or Mozilla. Instead, messages sent via IMP are stored by
default in a separate "sent-mail" folder and can only be viewed while
logged into IMP. To configure IMP to save sent messages in the Sent
folder that you see when using Netscape or Mozilla, follow the same
steps in the above tip to edit your Default Identity. Check the box
"Save sent mail." Under "Sent mail folder" choose "Sent" from your list
of folders (under the mail/ heading), then click the Change button.
