Some key benefits of this change: 1. users are now able to access their H: drive from off campus locations 2. the login environment will be simplified as the Novell client is phased out, replaced by the built-in Windows client On campus students who are part of the WIRED program should have received instructions for using a special client to map their H: drive (because student computers are not part of Active Directory). Off campus students will need to use WebDAV (see instructions below). The migration was seamless for faculty/staff computers that are part of Active Directory. If you are unsure whether your computer is part of Active Directory please see: http://www.lehigh.edu/security/actived/addirections.htm Faculty and staff users of Windows XP computers that are NOT part of Active Directory should contact their computing consultant (or the help desk) to have their computer added to Active Directory. In the meantime, the H: and Y: drives can be temporarily mapped by using the following instructions: http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/ad/ad_drives.html Laptop users (Macintosh users see below) who utilize their computers both on and off campus can use WebDAV to access the H: drive. Instructions for WebDAV can be found at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inlts/help/webdav/ <http://www.lehigh.edu/%7Einlts/help/webdav/> Users of operating systems other than Windows XP should follow these instructions: http://www.lehigh.edu/security/actived/othercomp.htm Over the next several months, LTS will migrate departmental I: drives from Novell to Microsoft. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your department computer consultant or contact the Help Desk at ext 8-HELP. *OXFORD** DICTIONARY OF NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY (DNB)* Hailed as a major publishing event, the new online edition of the standard biographical source for Britain, the Dictionary of National Biography was first published in 1885-1900, with numerous later supplements. The new edition encompasses biographies of 55,000 people from over 10,000 contributors, drawn from scholars and independent researchers from throughout the world. The 38,607 original biographies have been reviewed and updated, and there are also 16,315 "new lives." The added biographies feature not only twentieth century subjects, but also individuals underrepresented in the original, such as people in business and women. Figures newly covered also include Britons who lived in Europe and elsewhere; people born abroad who spent a significant part of their lives in Britain; and Americans from first settlement to independence. The initial funding for the DNB library subscription was provided by the Friends of the Lehigh University Libraries. Reach the new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography from the ASA Catalog or from the Library's Databases page http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder *DEWEY 000S MOVE TO FAIRCHILD MARTINDALE LIBRARY*** Over the semester break, all monographs and most journals classified in the Dewey Decimal 000 range were moved from Linderman Library to Fairchild Martindale Library. As a result, the 000 call number range for monographs is no longer divided between the two libraries: they are now all located together on the 3rd level north side of Fairchild Library (FM 3rd Floor North). The 000s include books in such areas as library science, journalism, and computer science. Likewise all of the journals classified in the 000s, except for general journals (classified in 050-059), are also in Fairchild Library. The 050 - 059 journals are comprised of long runs of general periodicals like Harpers and The Atlantic Monthly. Changes have been made in the online catalog to reflect these new locations. *LINDERMAN JOURNALS MOVE TO LOWER LEVEL ROTUNDA* Library and Technology Services (LTS) has begun the process of moving all Linderman bound journals to the lowest level of the Rotunda. In the renovated Linderman Library bound journals will be shelved together in call number order as they are in Fairchild Library. By the end of January, LTS expects that bound journals with Dewey classifications in the 050-059s, 100s, 200s, and 400s will have been moved. Signs are being posted in Linderman as journals are being moved. Signs will also be posted elsewhere to keep users apprised of progress on this project. Changes will be made in the online catalog as the project proceeds to reflect these relocations to Linderman Basement - Rotunda. *LINDERMAN CLOSES MAY 11, 2005 AND RE-OPENS IN JANUARY 2007* *Retrieval of Linderman books and journals will be done by library staff. *These three steps by faculty will facilitate a smooth transition. Library and Technology Services staff are prepared to help: *1. Borrow Linderman books* soon that you may need for teaching or research. Linderman books can be renewed unless (a) the books are re-called for another user or (b) you leave the university and must return all library materials. *2. Identify core reading lists* of Linderman books for courses. These will be moved to a "mini-Linderman" area in Fairchild Library beginning in late spring 2005 for convenient student use. *3. Encourage graduate students *who need Linderman materials to borrow them soon too. The books can be renewed unless they are recalled for another user or the student leaves the university. For more information contact librarians Roseann Bowerman (rb04, x83053) or Kathe Morrow (kem6, 83041). *TELECOMMUNICATIONS MOVES TO COMPUTING CENTER IN FEB* In February 2005 the Telecommunications Team will move permanently from Linderman Library to the lower level of the Fairchild Computing Center. This will include a move of the university telephone operators as well as Team Leader Lizanne Hurst and her staff: Debbie Henritzy, Lisa Luchini, and Monica Weber. The offices are in the former Lewis training lab (room 194/196) immediately adjacent to the elevator.** *JP MORGAN CHASE GIFT BOOSTS SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING* Library and Technology Services recently received a large computer system from JP Morgan Chase to be used by students, faculty and staff for research, graduate and undergraduate instruction. This system is part of a growing scientific computing infrastructure at Lehigh that is being designed to enhance research and innovation in teaching and learning. The addition of this system will increase the available scientific computing resources at Lehigh to over 400 processors and nearly one terabyte of RAM. It will enable faculty and researchers to conduct scientific research more efficiently as well as give graduate and undergraduate students exposure to a wider range of systems and resources. The donated system is an Egenera computer cluster (http://www.egenera.com/prod_home.php) consisting of 96 Intel processors and a total of 288 Gigabytes of Random Access Memory (RAM). It is a diskless system meaning that it does not have internal storage such as a hard disk drive. It will be connected to a SAN (Storage Area Network) which will handle the primary storage requirements. The system runs the Redhat Enterprise Linux operating system and is located in the computer room in Fairchild Martindale Library/Computer Center. It is currently being configured and will be available for general use in February 2005.
