The upgrade/outage schedule through January 14, 2005 is available at the following website: http://www.lehigh.edu/networkupgrades Please check the schedule to determine when your building/department will experience a scheduled outage. Classroom-intensive buildings will be upgraded during break periods but other buildings are being upgraded during the regular semester during this long and complex project. Continuing through June 2005, LTS will be replacing old network hubs and switches with 200 new Cisco switches in 68 academic and administrative buildings on the Asa Packer, Mountain Top and Goodman Campuses. Over 7000 network jacks will be upgraded. For more information on the project and its benefits see: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/tims/network/network.html *WIRELESS SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS* AT&T Wireless service for students, employees and corporate users will be enhanced by two major developments over the last few months - a new University contract with expanded benefits, and Cingular's recently-approved purchase of AT&T Wireless. For more info, please visit Telecommunications Services' web page www.lehigh.edu/phones <http://www.lehigh.edu/phones> and follow the links to Wireless Phone Service. *PHONE AND LAN WORK ORDERS* With much time and attention being devoted to the network improvement project, LTS' normal turnaround time for problems and work requests must be suspended until the project wraps up early next summer. When reporting phone or LAN problems or requesting changes to these services, please provide as much lead time as possible. We will address them as quickly as the project allows. For further details, please see our work order time and pricing schedule at www.lehigh.edu/phones/pricing.html <http://www.lehigh.edu/phones/pricing.html> . *THE CONDOR GRID AT LEHIGH* A Grid computing network is a distributed computing environment consisting of a group of computers managed by a Grid computing software package (such as Condor). The Grid computing software package uses the CPUs of computers within the Grid to process information only when the computers are turned on and not being used. A Grid network consists of a "head node" (computer) with the Grid software manager installed and several client computers that have a Grid client installed. The "head node" performs all of the scheduling of computing jobs and distributes tasks to computers that are part of the Grid. There are 2 separate Condor Grids currently available for use at Lehigh: 1. The SGI Public (free use) Grid consisting of the SGI 3800 compute server, 22 public IBM workstations as well as various systems such as Macintoshs and PCs. The "head" node for this system is located in the SGI 3800 at rigel.cc.lehigh.edu. 2. The Beowulf Cluster Grid (usage for a fee) which utilizes the 96 processors that make up the Lehigh Beowulf Cluster. The "head node" for the Beowulf Cluster Grid is located on fire1.cc.lehigh.edu. Since the Beowulf Cluster is essentially its own private network, these two Grids cannot communicate with each other. To use the SGI Grid you need to use your current Lehigh AFS account and login to rigel.cc.lehigh.edu. To use the Beowulf Grid you need to request a Beowulf account by contacting Kelly Decker at ksd2@lehigh.edu. After an account is obtained, access to the Beowulf Cluster Grid may be accomplished by logging into fire1.cc.lehigh.edu. Instructions for accessing and using these Condor Grids can be found at http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/research.html *MONOGRAPHS & JOURNALS MOVE* Most books and many journals in the Dewey Decimal range 000 are being moved permanently from the Linderman Library lower rotunda to the Fairchild Martindale Library. The 070 books (journalism) are already in place on the appropriate floor. Other books in the 000s will be moved later in the semester. Most 000 journals to be moved (all except the 050-059 classification) are also already in place in Fairchild Martindale Library. If you have any difficulty locating materials, please contact the Circulation desks in either library or the Help Desk in Fairchild Martindale. *LINDERMAN CLOSURE -- READING LISTS NEEDED* When Linderman Library closes for renovation in May 2005 the majority of the collection will not be immediately available during the anticipated 18 months of construction. LTS staff have developed plans to alleviate some of the pain of this situation. A highly selective "mini-Linderman" collection will be moved to Fairchild Martindale Library comprised of faculty requests, reading lists and high usage materials. A website describing these strategies and the way faculty can assist in this process has just been developed. If your teaching or research utilizes library materials found in Linderman Library, please visit http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/linderman/faq_faculty.html to learn about these plans and how to participate in this process. *PLANET LEHIGH* Did you know that Lehigh University has its very own asteroid or "minor planet"? This fall, Special Collections features an exhibition titled "Planet Lehigh: Early Astronomy Education", which includes details about the asteroid, discovered in 1909, and how it came to bear the name "Lehigh". The exhibition also has information about asteroids generally; the history of astronomy at Lehigh University; astronomical instruments, including a telescope, that were used in Lehigh's Sayre Observatory; and information about the present day astronomy and astrophysics program. Come by to see the exhibition, Monday through Friday 1:00-5:00, in the Bayer Galleria. In addition, Special Collections has cataloged Planet Lehigh in ASA, the Library's online catalog. To find the record, look up the asteroid's official name, "691 Lehigh," as a title search. *NEW HELP DESK SYSTEM: BETTER COMMUNICATION!* The help desk now has a problem tracking system that supports enhanced communication and follow-up on reported problems. When a problem is reported to the help desk, it is either answered immediately, or, if the problem requires further action or follow-up, it may be entered into the Unipress Footprints help desk system.. Users who wish to receive updates on the status of the problem can give their name to help desk staff. When a user's name is associated with the ticket/problem, he or she will receive an email with updates on the problem status and resolution. Help desk staff can also call up the ticket by the user name or ticket number (as well as other criteria). Examples of problems requiring staff follow-up include hardware issues, software diagnosis by a computing specialist, a research question that is referred to a librarian, or a classroom problem that is referred to technicians. For more information on the help desk system, contact 8-4357. *DIAGNOSING AND FIXING A SLOW BOOTUP* When a computer takes a long time to boot, checking for viruses and spyware are reasonable first steps. Once these two problems have been ruled out, additional troubleshooting steps can help to find and remove the impediments to a better (faster) bootup. To find out more, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/~inlts/help/faq/slowboot/slowbootup.html <http://www.lehigh.edu/%7Einlts/help/faq/slowboot/slowbootup.html>** *DISK CLEANUP UTILITY* Disk Cleanup is a utility that can easily identify and delete unnecessary files on your hard drive which can significantly improve your system's performance. When using disk cleanup, do not select Office Setup Files for deletion as they are used by Microsoft to update Office. Directions on how to use the Disk Cleanup Utility can be found at: http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm *DEPARTMENTAL LAN SPACE MAINTENANCE* Faculty and staff have access to departmental LAN space represented by the drive letter "I" and often referred to as the "common drive." Like email and web space, LAN space is quota-restricted. Attempting to save files or open files when a quota is at or near its limit can cause loss of data. Therefore, as part of regular maintenance, users should review this area of the network and move or delete unnecessary files to keep their department's quota within limits. Use care when deleting files because users in the same department typically have rights to modify or delete each other's common drive files. So be sure to delete only files that you created and/or those that are not needed by other users. *THANKSGIVING BREAK LIBRARY HOURS* Thanksgiving Break November 24 - 28 Fairchild-Martindale and Linderman Libraries: Wednesday, November 24, open 8 am - 10 pm Thursday, November 25, CLOSED Friday, November 26, open 8 am - 5 pm Saturday, November 27, open Noon - 5 pm Sunday, November 28, open Noon - 2 am* *Linderman closes at Midnight ****************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
