The CD is free to all full-time students and can be picked up by contacting Margaret Petrovich, Client Services, Room 394 Computing Center, at mjp3@lehigh.edu <mailto:mjp3@lehigh.edu> or Ext. 83830. The CD includes the following software: Fastnet and Lehigh dial-up connection software, Netscape 7, Mozilla Firefox (browser only), Mozilla Thunderbird (email only), Symantec Antivirus 9.0, miscellaneous virus removal tools, Spybot Search & Destroy, QuickTime 6, Real Media Player, Acrobat Reader 6, WinZip 8, SSH Secure Shell, and Novell Client Software. * * * * * * *WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2 & SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS UPDATES* As of Wednesday, August 25, Microsoft released the Microsoft Windows Service Pack 2 as part of the Automatic Windows Update feature for Windows XP. Installing this service pack is highly recommended because it includes many security features that will help keep your PC secure from viruses and external threats. In addition to installing Service Pack 2, users that have Symantec/Norton AntiVirus installed need to also update their AntiVirus program. If possible, it is recommended that the following steps be used (in order) when installing the Symantec Updates and Windows XP Service Pack 2: 1. Install the Symantec AntiVirus updates Note: If you are running *Symantec/Norton Version 8 or less*, you need to first upgrade to Symantec 9 before installing the Symantec 9 update for Service Pack 2. (To check your Symantec/Norton version in Windows XP go to Start-All Programs-Symantec Client Security (or Norton AntiVirus), start Symantec/Norton and look at the Program version displayed). Symantec 9 may be installed from the Wired CD or downloaded from https://www.lehigh.edu/security/norton/ . It is recommended that previous versions of Symantec/Norton be uninstalled prior to installing version 9. Download and install the Symantec update for Service Pack 2 at https://www.lehigh.edu/security/norton/XPSP2Patch.html 2. Install Service Pack 2 (2 options). * Option 1 - Service Pack 2 may be obtained by using the Windows Automatic Update feature (located in the Windows control panel) or by visiting: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us Option 2 - Service Pack 2 may be downloaded and installed manually from: https://www.lehigh.edu/security/download/XPSP2.exe Since the Windows Service Pack 2 takes a minimum of 45 minutes to install, it is not crucial that it be performed immediately (it may not be possible through the Windows Automatic Update since Microsoft is limiting the number of downloads per day). However, it should be performed at the earliest possible time. Service Pack 2 is relatively simple to install, you run the program, agree to the license agreement and start the installation. After the service pack is installed, you will be prompted to re-boot. If you have any problems or concerns, please contact the Help Desk at 8-HELP or your department Computing Consultant. * * * * * * *NEW HELP DESK TRACKING SOFTWARE* In July, the LTS Help Desk "went live" with a new request tracking software package, called Unipress Footprints. Footprints is currently used by LTS staff to enter and track requests from Lehigh faculty, staff, and students. If you request an LTS service (e.g., replace a failed hard drive), report a problem (e.g., station E in Iacocca D109 has a broken monitor), or ask for help (my computer won't boot), the problem will be tracked in Footprints. LTS Librarians are using Footprints to track their projects, research consultations, and instruction. This system is designed to facilitate communication and make sure reported issues are brought to resolution. For example, if clients report a problem or make a request for service, they will receive an email message with details of the request and a ticket number for tracking purposes. When the ticket is closed, they will get an email message describing the resolution to the request. Throughout the process, clients can call the help desk to get an update on progress (provide the ticket number or last name). Presently we are also testing a survey feature, so that users can provide feedback on their experience. In the future, clients will be able to use Footprints to enter and track their own tickets. For more information about Footprints, contact the help desk at 8-4357. * * * * * * *SOFTWARE TO ERADICATE WEB PESTS (SPYWARE, PARASITES, ETC)* Several months ago, the LTS Digest featured an article describing Web parasites (see http://www.lehigh.edu/~inlts/help/faq/qa/parasite.htm <http://www.lehigh.edu/%7Einlts/help/faq/qa/parasite.htm>), which are also called "spyware." Lehigh computing specialists have evaluated options for anti-spyware software. There are numerous commercial and shareware products that are effective and easy to use. At this time, we are recommending a freeware product called Spybot Search & Destroy. Spybot is one of the few products to offer a form of "real time" protection which prevents infection in the first place. It recognizes and eradicates a wide range of known spyware/parasites, and it is easy to install and use. Information on downloading and setting up Spybot is at http://www.lehigh.edu/~inlts/help/spyware/ <http://www.lehigh.edu/%7Einlts/help/spyware/> If you have additional questions, please contact the help desk at 8-4357. * * * * * * *MYLIBRARY PORTAL* LTS released MyLibrary @ Lehigh into the Campus Portal in late August. MyLibrary is a portal application that allows users to personalize electronic library subscriptions and research databases that they use on a regular basis or pertain to their discipline of study. It is designed to help users cope with the complexity and general "information overload" of the current rich resource environment. By clicking on the MyLibrary tab in the Portal, users can login to MyLibrary. Users will initially see a default set of library resources chosen by the reference librarian who manages library resources for that discipline. Other functions allow for changing or merging other profiles (disciplinary lists). Contact your LTS College Team librarian or the LTS Help Desk for more information. * * * * * * *LIBRARY COLLECTION MOVES* Within a few weeks, several Linderman collections will be moved to Fairchild-Martindale Library. Books in the journalism collection that fall in the Dewey Decimal range 070 to 079 will be moved to the 3rd floor North in Fairchild-Martindale. This move will integrate journalism materials with related materials in the social sciences. Bound periodicals in the 000-099 Dewey Decimal range will also be shifted to the Fairchild-Martindale Library, 3rd floor South, with the exception of titles in the 050-059 range, which are being reviewed for appropriate placement, and a small group of titles that will be reclassified to remain in the literature collection in Linderman. All changes will be reflected in the ASA catalog. * * * * * * *AMERICAN PERIODICALS SERIES ONLINE, 1750-1900* This new treasure of accessible information contains digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals that originated between 1741 and 1900. Featured are over 1,100 titles ranging from popular magazines like Vanity Fair and Ladies' Home Journal to periodicals documenting the political history of the nineteenth century, such as the abolitionist movement and the Civil War era, as well as literary magazines of note. The service will eventually cover 400 additional titles. This primary source material will be helpful in a wide range of courses in humanities and social sciences disciplines. Durable links can be made to individual articles and periodicals. A complete list of periodicals covered is available from the APS site. A Web training session on the APS will be held on September 27 at 3pm. Please contact Kathe Morrow (kem6@lehigh.edu <mailto:kem6@lehigh.edu>) to sign up. The American Periodicals Series can be accessed from the Library Services web page, and through the MyLibrary portal. This major resource was purchased with support from the College of Arts and Sciences. *SELF-SERVICE SCANNERS INSTALLED IN LIBRARIES* The E. W. Fairchild Martindale (EWFM) and Linderman Libraries now have self-service scanners to make copies of library materials (within the constraints of copyright law). The scanning equipment includes: --At EWFM Library, two new Gateway E-series PCs running Windows XP and HP 5530 Photosmart scanners in the south end of the first floor, next to the photocopiers --At Linderman Library, one Gateway E-series PC running Windows XP and an HP 5530 Photosmart scanner in the Reading Room by the kiosk stations. The scanners are intended for fast self-service scans of text and pictures. The images can then be saved to a microdiskette, CD, to a jump drive, or to the network H: drive. For intensive scanning work, color printing, or image editing, visit Media Production in Linderman, the Media Center in EWFM, or the IMRC in Maginness Hall, which have image editing and OCR software. Note: These machines can be rebooted, but please ask for assistance before you refresh/reload the hard disk image. If the hard disk image is refreshed/reloaded, the scanning software will need to be reinstalled. For assistance with the scanning equipment at EWFM Library go to the Help Desk; at Linderman Library, go to the Circulation Desk. ******************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
