PROJECTS IN AND AROUND FAIRCHILD LIBRARY
In Fairchild Library new public site machines and tables are being
installed on all floors through late July and early August. The main
floor installation includes an additional "kiosk" machine and tables
more conducive to group work. Approximately half of the machines will be
available at all times, as the project is being done in two parts for
user convenience. For updates about other summer site installations, see:
http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/tims/facilities/sitenews.html

The "big dig" in the EWFM plaza area that has required users to enter
the Fairchild Library through the Media Center door is expected to be
finished sufficiently to allow the front door of Fairchild Library to be
open on August 19th for the LTS Fair and the semester. This project
provides new roofing/waterproofing on the top and south side of the
Computing Center. In mid-July a separate project to the east, in the
sculpture court, began, blocking off access to pedestrian traffic
through the EWFM breezeway now from both directions. This project is to
build an addition to Sinclair Lab for the Center for Optical
Technologies. Finally, both the computer room coolers and the roof
itself were replaced on the top of EWFM8A. This project will be finished
soon.

DIGITIZED JOURNALS RELOCATED TO LMC
Lehigh has for some time been a participant in JSTOR, the nonprofit
project that digitally archives scholarly periodicals. The reliability
and popularity of JSTOR have led academic librarians at many
institutions to conclude that print volumes of titles represented in
JSTOR can be placed in a remote storage site.

Over the summer, print back volumes of selected journals fully
represented in JSTOR have been moved to our storage facility (Library
Materials Center), beginning with those titles housed on the 3rd floor
of Fairchild-Martindale Library. Disciplines heavily represented include
sociology, anthropology, political science, economics, and general
science. Faculty library liaisons in affected departments have been
contacted about these moves. Volumes will be retained in storage and can
be retrieved if for some reason the original print must be consulted.
In general, JSTOR has a "moving wall" of 3 to 5 years -- the time period
allotted for the publisher to benefit from subscription revenue for a
given year's issues until that volume is digitized by JSTOR and folded
into the archive. All current issues that have not been digitized will
remain in the current periodicals area. Current years of many of these
journals are also available electronically from the publisher's web
site. Details on physical and electronic locations of journals are
available from the ASA catalog.

For a complete list of journals available through JSTOR, please see
http://www.jstor.org/about/collection.list.html

Lehigh subscribes to Arts and Sciences I, II, III, IV, the Arts and
Sciences Complement, and the General Science collection.

USING LEHIGH'S SECURE WIRELESS NETWORK
Lehigh is in the process of implementing a secure wireless networking
environment wherein everyone will be required to log in to obtain access
to wireless resources. Throughout the summer more wireless locations,
including all residence halls, will be converted over to the secure
wireless networking standard. Currently EWFM 8B (Computing Center), the
Campus Square Plaza, Packard Lab, Rauch Business Center and
Transportation Services are setup for secure wireless. For a complete
list of wireless locations on campus, see
http://www.lehigh.edu/wireless/locations.html
Accessing the secure wireless network will require a special
configuration. Instructions for Windows XP users can be found at the
Lehigh Security web page
<http://www.lehigh.edu/security/SecureWirelessXP.html> Instructions for
Mac OS users will be available soon.
For anyone who hosts a conference or other event that brings non-Lehigh
individuals to campus who expect wireless access on their laptops, you
must request a temporary computer account so they can authenticate to
secure wireless. Non-Lehigh individuals who do not have a temporary
account cannot logon to the secure network. Contact your computing
consultant for assistance, if needed.

Note: Palm-based devices with wireless capabilities are not supported
on Lehigh's secure wireless network. You should not purchase a
wireless-enabled Palm with the intent of using wireless on campus.
However, there are provisions to facilitate secure wireless use of PDA's
built on the Microsoft Pocket PC platform.
