SUMMER PROJECT CHANGES FAIRCHILD LIBRARY ENTRY Starting very soon after final exams are finished in May, a project will begin to improve the waterproofing for the lower (underground) floors of the E. W. Fairchild Library and Computing Center. Because the outside plaza will be largely removed, entry into and exit from the Fairchild Library will be moved to the Media Center door across from the Bookstore. Entry into the Fairchild Computing Center will remain the same during summer 2004. As a result, the Media Center door (but not the Media Center itself) will remain open the same hours as the Fairchild Library. There is provision for persons with disabilities to enter as well. The main entrance to EWFM will again be available by the time the fall semester begins. NEW PROXY OFFERS "EZ" ACCESS TO OFF-CAMPUS USERS Library and Technology Services (LTS) is changing the way off-campus users access Lehigh's various subscription services, such as databases and electronic journals. For years, the "proxy server," a setting in browsers that makes it appear that off-campus users have Lehigh IP addresses, was used by subscription services to authorize users. Although this worked well for many people, it did not work for those who used certain Internet service providers (such as AOL) or who were behind "firewalls." The new system is EZProxy and has now been implemented on the LTS Databases page (http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/) which now features separate links for "on -campus" and "off-campus". During each session, off-campus users are asked once for their Lehigh userid and password, and then enjoy the same ease of access that they would on campus. Browser settings, browser update issues, Windows versions and cookies settings no longer present problems. The next phase of implementation, to take place over the summer, will include adding EZProxy links to ASA to handle journal subscriptions and other electronic resources. At this time, users still need to retain the old proxy for journal and e-book access. Once the EZProxy conversion is complete, users will be advised to remove the current proxy settings. THE PENNA DIGITAL LIBRARY OF ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS "The Pennsylvania Digital Library of Illuminated Manuscripts" is a new Lehigh digital library project designed to bring together scattered holdings of illuminated manuscripts across Pennsylvania. These holdings may go unnoticed by themselves in libraries with only a few or even a single example. When "collected" together digitally, however, they have the potential to constitute a resource of great usefulness to students and scholars in art history and other fields. The present site, at http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/manuscripts/, with digitized manuscripts from Lehigh University and Villanova University, has been under development for several months. It has become publicly available in order to solicit contributions. Julia Maserjian, LTS Digital Library Project Coordinator, and Robert Weidman, Digital Library Technical Coordinator, are responsible for the development of the site. Ann Priester, Lecturer in Art and Architecture, is advising the project, and Philip Metzger, Curator of Special Collections, is developing the content. This project is the latest addition to a set of Lehigh digital library projects that includes "Digital Bridges," "Lehigh Valley Geology: Historical Works", and "The Problem of Planets: Astronomy Online" all of which can be found at http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/ ADOBE ACROBAT ALTERNATIVES Due to ongoing technical problems with Adobe Acrobat, Library and Technology Services (LTS) has formed a committee to seek alternative software for users who create and edit PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat will continue to be available at the Media Center, IMRC and TRLC. Networked licenses will also be available to faculty and staff until a suitable alternative is found; for installation directions, users must contact their computing consultant. Users are also encouraged to consult a computing consultant about installing and experimenting with an Acrobat alternative, such as PDF995, and are encouraged to send feedback about alternative programs to Gwyn Allman (gja2@lehigh.edu) IS YOUR HOME PC PROTECTED FROM VIRUSES? Lehigh's site license agreement for Norton Antivirus allows faculty, staff, and students to install a copy of the software on their home PCs. If Norton Antivirus is installed on your home system, be sure you are adequately protected from viruses by enabling automatic updates. When choosing a time to perform automatic updates, select a time when your computer is most likely to be turned on and connected to the Internet. See https://www.lehigh.edu/security/norton/docs/liveupdate.htm for instructions on enabling automatic updates. In addition, you can always manually initiate an update by opening the program and clicking Live Update. A copy of Norton Antivirus is available on the Lehigh CD, which can be borrowed from the EWFM Circulation Desk, or purchased from the Bookstore for $5. PARASITES, MALWARE, AND SPYWARE Have you ever gotten a popup window that prompts you to download a program or file that you didn't recognize? Has your Web browser homepage ever changed mysteriously to an unfamiliar commercial Web site? If so, you may have encountered a parasite (also called Malware or Spyware). Parasites are more than an annoyance -- they can interfere with your PC performance. For more information, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/~inlts/help/faq/qa/parasite.htm FINAL EXAM LIBRARY HOURS May 3 - 12 Fairchild Martindale Library: Monday, May 3 through Tuesday May 11 open continuously Wednesday May 12 open 8 am - 10 pm Linderman Library: Monday, May 3 through Tuesday May 11 open 8 am - 2 am Wednesday, May 12 open 8 am - 10 pm ******************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
