REFERENCE BOOKS GO ONLINE As part of the transition of libraries from print to electronic format, the traditional reference collection of encyclopedias, statistical works, dictionaries and handbooks is undergoing a transformation. Lehigh has recently subscribed to two services offering a broad range of electronic reference works. Oxford Reference Online offers more than 120 familiar Oxford University Press reference works in a searchable electronic format. Titles include the Oxford Companion series (e.g. "Oxford Companion to Classical Literature"), language dictionaries, a quotations dictionary, and specialized subject dictionaries and handbooks. A rival service, XReferPlus, features a complementary set of 150 subject reference works (examples: music dictionaries, medical dictionaries, literature guides), plus an entertaining crossword solver. Titles have been added to the ASA catalog, and the services are accessible through Lehigh's database finder (http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/). Faculty are encouraged to add relevant titles to Blackboard course pages and other course-related Web sites. A course offered this semester by Profs. Alex Levine and Gary Deleo from physics is partly based around two early astronomical works in Lehigh's Special Collections: the 1543 first edition of Nicholas Copernicus' "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres" and Tycho Brahe's "Instruments for the Restoration of Astronomy" (1602) to help them understand astronomical apparatus before the invention of the telescope. Both works have been digitized by library staff. The web site for The Problem of Planets http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/planets is now linked from the Library Services Page, http://www.lehigh.edu/library/ HEAVENLY SPHERES: EXHIBIT OF EARLY ASTRONOMY WORKS A new exhibit in the Bayer Galleria at Linderman Library highlights remarkable early astronomical works. It features first or rare editions by Copernicus, Brahe, Galileo, Kepler, Newton and others. The exhibition will be on display through the third week of March 2004 in Linderman Library's Special Collections. Hours: 1-5 p.m. M-F, otherwise by appointment. This means that critical updates such as security patches (in response to new virus outbreaks) for Windows 98 will no longer be developed, free and paid phone support at Microsoft will no longer be available and online self help will end January 16, 2005. After the initial Windows 98 support announcement, Microsoft changed its position on some issues relating to the termination of Windows 98 support. Microsoft will now be extending paid incident support to June 30, 2006 and will extend free online self-help support until June 30, 2007. Library and Technology Services (LTS), however, is still moving forward with plans to work with university departments to upgrade and replace as many Windows 98 computers as possible. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to fully integrate Windows 98 computers on the Lehigh network and third party software support for Windows 98 is continuing to decrease. WIRELESS IS MORE: 20 NEW LAPTOPS, EXPANDED COVERAGE Twenty new notebook computers for loan from the libraries are now ready for use by Lehigh University students at the Circulation Desks: ten in Fairchild Martindale and ten in Linderman. These notebooks are new IBM ThinkPads that offer longer battery life that should last through the four-hour loan period. The notebooks have a CDRW and DVD combo drive so users can save work to a CD as well as on individual campus LAN space. Pre-loaded software consists of Microsoft Office Professional but other software can be installed from the network. To ensure security, the machines will be refreshed at the circulation desks after each use. Ethernet network cards are included so users also have the option of accessing the network through a wired network jack. Wireless network coverage is greatly expanded at Fairchild Library and should be available in almost every area of the building. At the same time wireless coverage has been added or enhanced in other areas on campus, including the new Maginnes classrooms and Packard Laboratory. Extensive wireless coverage is already available in Coppee Hall, Mohler Lab, Wilbur Powerhouse, and Coxe Hall. GUIDE TO LEHIGH E-MAIL NOW AVAILABLE Library and Technology Services has published a Web-based guide to Lehigh e-mail services and features. The guide is intended as a general overview for new and experienced users. Faculty, staff, and students can use this guide to learn e-mail basics, make optimal use of existing features and options, and troubleshoot problems. To see the guide, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/computing or http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk Please send feedback to the helpdesk@lehigh.edu MANAGING PORTAL GROUPS Would you like an easy and convenient way to send correspondence, maintain a calendar and share information with a committee, club or other interest group? If so, a portal group may be the answer. A portal group provides members with a number of useful tools, including a calendar, e-mail, and a message board. Through the group home page, members can: -read news articles posted by the group -access links to other web pages -view photos posted by the group -view files posted for sharing. Depending on the purpose of the group, a portal group may be public (anyone can join), restricted (specific criteria required to join) or hidden (not displayed, typically used for sensitive information). For more information and instructions on joining and requesting groups, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/~inportst/PortalGroupsInstructions.pdf http://www.lehigh.edu/~inportst/portalfaq.html#groups To learn more, attend the new LTS seminar, Managing Portal Groups, on March 15, 3:00-4:00 pm. Register at http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/sems/schedule.html "FORBIDDEN" MESSAGE ON "IN" ACCOUNT WEB PAGES Library and Technology Services (LTS) requires that passwords be changed every six months for all computer accounts. If you are the designated owner of a special account, sometimes referred to as an "in" account, and you allowed the password to expire, users will encounter a forbidden access error on web pages associated with that account. To resolve this issue, go to the Account Open page (http://www.lehigh.edu/open) for that account and reset the password. LTS sends an e-mail reminder to account owners to change their passwords. If you do not regularly check e-mail on "in" accounts, consider forwarding e-mail from that account to your personal e-mail account. To do this, go to the Account Maintenance page at http://www.lehigh.edu/account and click "Mail Forwarding." ******************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
