WEB OF SCIENCE
Lehigh University now has the "Web of Science", a resource that allows
not only traditional keyword searching across a wide variety of
subjects, but also citation searching. Citation searches start with a
known document and find papers later in time that cite it. This is a
powerful way to develop bibliographies as well as to monitor the impact
of published research.

Lehigh's implementation of the Web of Science is greatly enhanced by the
presence of our new Lehigh Links/SFX service, which allows immediate
retrieval of Web of Science source articles to which Lehigh subscribes.

The Web of Science encompasses three data sets: the Science Citation
Index, the Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities
Citation Index. Each of these is available 1993 forward on the Web of
Science. The three files can be searched simultaneously or individually.
Paper versions are still available for years previous to 1993.

Some additional useful features: the ability to sort literature by
number of times cited, a great way to locate important papers; ability
to email results; and exporting of search results to reference software.

Faculty and students wanting to learn more about the Web of Science are
invited to take one of the LTS seminars on this topic, or to contact the
relevant subject librarian for more information. For a schedule of the
seminars, see http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/sems/lts-seminar.html

LEHIGH VALLEY GEOLOGY FEATURED WEBSITE
Library and Technology Services has completed a new digital library
project, "Geology of Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Pennsylvania:
Historical Works". Available off the library homepage
(http://www.lehigh.edu/library/), the website features digitized
versions of Pennsylvania Geological Survey volumes covering Northampton
and Lehigh Counties, primarily authored by the late Lehigh professor
B.L. Miller. The volumes detail regional geology, history, place names,
culture, meteorology, and economics. The website also features Miller's
1939 pamphlet (with itineraries) about geologic sites in the Lehigh
Valley, and items relating to Miller and the Lehigh geology department.
A related exhibition is on view on Linderman Library's first floor open
during library hours, and in the Bayer Galleria of Rare Books, open
Mon-Fri 1-5 and by appointment. Display cases include publications and
maps digitized for the website; rocks and fossils; and materials
relating to the colorful career of professor, writer, traveler,
consultant and popular lecturer B.L Miller.

PASSWORD CHANGES
Every six months, Lehigh faculty, staff, and students are prompted to
change their password for security purposes. The help desk frequently
gets calls from users who report that their email has stopped working
once they change their password. In most cases, the problem is that
users have their email program set up to "remember," or auto-enter,
their password. This feature is not recommended unless the PC is in a
secure area, turned off when unattended, and protected by a login. But
if you do use this feature, when you change your password you'll have to
take a few extra steps. Read more.

Instructions for Netscape 7.1 Users
Netscape Messenger lets you check a box to have Messenger "remember"
your password - Netscape stores and automatically enters your password
when you launch your email.

Instructions for doing this in Netscape 7.1 are below:

Netscape 7.1
--Go to Tools > Password Manager > Manage Stored Passwords.
--In the passwords saved tab, highlight the choice "
imap://youruserid.lehigh.edu" and select "Remove." Click Close.
--The next time you log in, you'll be prompted for your new password. If
you want the new password to be remembered, check the box "Use Password
Manager to remember this password."

SPYWARE: WHAT IS IT AND HOW DO I GET RID OF IT?
Has your browser acquired a mysterious new toolbar? Are new program
icons suddenly appearing when you boot up your system? Do you get pop-up
ads even when your browser is closed? These are some telltale signs that
your computer is playing host to spyware.

Spyware is any software that gathers user information through your
Internet connection without your knowledge, usually for advertising
purposes. Spyware applications are usually bundled as a hidden component
of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the
Internet, such as Kazaa, Comet Cursor and Gator. Once installed, spyware
monitors user activity on the Internet and can do things such as record
your browsing history, create pop-up ads, change your browser home page
and even affect your PC's performance and stability.

If you suspect your computer has fallen victim to this type of program,
there are some effective products that will remove them, such as
Ad-Aware. Please contact your computing consultant for assistance with
using these removal tools.

TELECOM TIDBIT
Forget how to change your outbound voice mail greeting? It's easy, and
you can make the change from on campus or off. At the main menu of your
mailbox (where you usually press 1 to check messages), press 4-3-1-2.
You will be prompted to re-record and check your greeting. For a quick
reference guide to this and other useful voice mail functions, please
check the Voice Mail section of Telecommunications Services' web page,
http://www.lehigh.edu/phones/
