LEHIGH CD NOW AVAILABLE
The Fall 2003 Lehigh CD is now available for faculty and staff at the
Bookstore for $5.00. The CD is free to all full-time students and can be
picked up by contacting Margaret Petrovich, Client Services, Rm 394
Computing Center, at mjp3@lehigh.edu or Ext. 83830.

The CD includes the following software:
Fastnet and Lehigh dial-up connection software, Netscape 7, Netscape
4.7, Norton Antivirus 8.0, QuickTime 6, Flash Player, Real Media Player,
Acrobat Reader 5, AOL Instant Messenger 5.1, WinZip 8, SSH Secure Shell,
Client 3.2, and the Windows XP Service Pack 1 Update.

LEHIGH LINKS - CONNECTING BETWEEN EINFO RESOURCES
LTS is currently implementing and testing a new tool that connects
citations found in indexing services such as Infotrac, the MLA
bibliography or Metadex with the full text of indexed articles. SFX
linking technology allows the user to begin in one database, then link
to a vast array of electronic content offered by Lehigh through many
publishers. In most cases, the link will go directly to the first page
of the article. Please note that link performance may be unpredictable
until testing and implementation are completed. Individual database
vendors may display SFX linking differently. Look for "Lehigh Links" or
"SFX" buttons and click!

SOURCEOECD DATABASE
SourceOECD <http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=140>
is a new electronic service acquired by the Library that will be helpful
to researchers in the social sciences, economics and business. This
online product provides instant access to materials produced by the
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development dating since
January 1998. All OECD monographs and reports, 24 periodicals, a
reference title and the OECD statistical databases are retrievable from
this service which is linked from the Library's Database Finder page.

Books are organized by subject themes such as Development, Education &
Skills, Energy, Finance & Industry etc. They can also be retrieved by
keyword searching of the extensive abstracts. The 24 periodicals in the
service include general periodicals such as the OECD Economic Outlook or
Financial Market Trends, as well as statistical periodicals such as Main
Science and Technology Indicators and Quarterly Labor Force Statistics.
Periodicals are also searchable by Title and Keyword. To review all the
books and periodicals included in this service visit the Source OECD
Periodicals page
<http://www.sourceoecd.org/content/html/portal/periodicals/periodical.htm?>

It is also possible to access the OECD statistical databases with this
service and build your own data tables. Tables can be exported to Excel,
Beyond 20/20 and .csv formats. Some of the many statistical databases
available include Main Economic Indicators, National Accounts Statistics
as well as specialized databases such as Bank Profitability,
International Direct Investment, Industrial Structure, Social
Expenditures and quite a few others.

STANDARD AND POOR'S MARKET INSIGHT
Market Insight is a recent addition to the growing list of LTS business
databases. Contents include Standard and Poor's Industry Surveys, Stock
Reports, and selected country data from the DRI-WEFA Country Overviews.
Do you want to know about the top executive compensation packages? The
Executive Compensation database will tell you. The database also offers
financial information from Compustat and the S&P Corporation Records for
companies. Company SEC filings (some back to 1993) are presented from
the Securities and Exchange Commission's Edgar database.

FREE LEHIGH BEOWULF COMPUTING CLUSTER USAGE
In order to acquaint users with the Lehigh University Beowulf High
Performance Computing Cluster, the Beowulf Steering Committee has
authorized a free usage period for September 22, 2003 through December
31, 2003. To use the Beowulf Cluster you must first request a Beowulf
Cluster account by filling out the form located at
http://www.lehigh.edu/~ltsforms/ and forwarding it to Kelly Decker at
ksd2@lehigh.edu. Information regarding the Beowulf Cluster can be found
at http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/sgi/beowulf.shtml. If you have any
questions please contact Paul Ryan at pfr2@lehigh.edu or Ext. 85852.

DATA STORAGE OPTIONS AT LTS PUBLIC SITES
Lehigh staff and students have a number of options for storing and
transporting data files. Below is a quick summary of the features of each.

Microdiskettes/floppies -- While these offer limited storage and are not
always reliable (avg. life 6 months), they are inexpensive, and all
public site PCs have diskette drives. Back up all files you have on floppy!

Zip disks -- Zip disks offer up to 250 megabytes of storage, but in the
event of corruption there are few recovery options. Zip drives are being
phased out of the public sites.

CD-RW** - Compact disks offer hundreds of megabytes of reliable storage,
but they are expensive and can only be written about 200 times. About
1/3 of Lehigh's public site machines have CD-RW drives. **CD-R's are
inexpensive but can only be written once.

Keychain/USB drives -- Keychain drives can be purchased in different
sizes, from a few megabytes to a gigabyte of storage. They are reliable
if handled carefully. All public site PCs have USB ports, but only 2/3
have USB ports on the front of the case.

Lehigh LAN space - Every Lehigh ID (Students/Faculty/Staff/other
accounts) has 250 megabytes of Lehigh LAN space accessible at all public
site PCs (but not off campus). Files in your personal space are backed
up nightly.

For more information about file storage options, contact the help desk
at 758-4357.

NEW VOICE MAIL SYSTEM FEATURE
Telecommunications Services recently enabled a new feature on the Octel
voice mail system: external CallerID. Effective immediately, when you
receive a voice message from off-campus and press "5" to obtain envelope
information, the system will no longer state that the message originated
with "an outside caller." Instead the system will announce the actual
phone number of the calling party.

On some occasions you may still hear that a message from an external
caller originated with "an outside caller". This will occur if the
calling party blocks their outgoing CallerID, or if the CallerID is not
available for some technical reason.

We hope this new feature will be helpful. Please feel free to call the
Voice Mail Helpline at extension 85300 with any questions about this or
any other voice mail feature.

MUTE CELL PHONES IN THE LIBRARIES
Library and Technology Services has established a Courtesy Policy for
the Linderman and Fairchild Libraries. Users are asked to mute their
cell phones in designated quiet areas.

NEW FAIRCHILD LIBRARY GROUP STUDY AREA
A new area in Fairchild Library has been configured as a group study. It
is located on the 2nd floor of Fairchild's Mart Wing in the glass
enclosed area at the far south (Packer Avenue) side of the building.
This area can only be reached by first going to the second floor and
walking through the current periodicals or government documents areas,
it is not accessible via the first floor. Comfortable furniture, low
tables and a door to minimize noise make this area ideal for some types
of group study.
