ACCESSING AND MAKING A SHORTCUT TO LAN PUBLIC FOLDERS
The last issue of the digest included instructions for saving large
files to your H:\Public folder as an alternative to sending them as
attachments via email. Some users may access another person's Public
folder often enough that they may want to place a shortcut to it on the
desktop. To make a shortcut to another user's H:\Public folder, click
Start > LU Public (Windows 9x) or click Start > All Programs > LU Public
(Windows XP). Locate the user's folder by clicking the first letter (or
two) of the person's User ID. Windows will quickly jump to the folders
that start with those letters. When you find the user's folder,
right-click it. Left-click "Send to" and then select "Desktop (create
shortcut)". Getting to their directory again is as simple as
double-clicking the shortcut.

If you have questions about this procedure, please contact your
computing consultant.

PLEASE COMPLETE LIBQUAL SURVEY
Library and Technology Services is very grateful to the students and
faculty who have already completed the LibQUAL survey on the quality of
Lehigh Library services sent out by e-mail on March 24th. It is taking a
median time of less than twelve minutes to complete this very important
survey. If you have not done so yet, you can do it now, by clicking on
the URL below.

Remember that if you complete the survey you are eligible for a drawing
for one of ten $100 gift certificates for Amazon.com! For detailed
information about the survey, consult the FAQ at www.lehigh.edu/lts/libqual

NEW IMACS IN THE FAIRCHILD MARTINDALE LIBRARY
LTS is putting the finishing touches on four new iMacs that are now
available on the 400 level of the Fairchild Martindale Library. These
iMacs run on the OS X operating system and feature an easy-to-adjust 17"
flatscreen monitor; 1 GHz PowerPCG4 processor; DVD/CD burner, 80
gigabyte hard drive, and powerful graphics processing capabilities.
Software installed on these machines includes Internet Explorer, the
Microsoft Office suite, and other Mac-supplied applications. Work is
under way to further integrate the iMacs into the Lehigh network. For
additional information on the iMacs, contact the help desk at 8-HELP.

SPAMASSASSIN: SPAM FILTERING FOR LEHIGH
In recent months, many people have reported an increase in the amount of
spam, or unsolicited commercial email, that they are receiving. LTS
provides a spam filtering service called SpamAssassin to identify spam
coming into your inbox.

SpamAssassin uses an algorithm to identify suspicious mail, and certain
attributes will make it more likely that email is spam and tagged as
such. Some examples include:
--Certain keywords, such as "click here now" or "free offer" in the
subject line or body text.
--HTML tagging that includes very large fonts and multicolored text.
--Date info is 12 to 24 hours after Received: date.

SpamAssassin inserts the text [SPAM} in the subject line of any email
message that is suspected of being spam. If you want to see why a
message was tagged as spam, SpamAssassin appends a descriptive summary
at the beginning of the message. Make sure not to open any attachments
that accompany the message. Read the summary of the email
characteristics that caused the message to be tagged as spam.

More information about SpamAssassin will be included in later Digest
articles. For additional information, contact the help desk at.8-HELP.

COMMAND ANTIVIRUS LICENSE EXPIRES MAY 30, 2003
Lehigh University's license for Command AntiVirus expires May 30, 2003.
Therefore, all versions of Command AntiVirus software installed on
student or faculty/staff computers must be removed by May 30th. Library
and Technology Services (LTS) has recently acquired the commercial
version of Norton AntiVirus as a replacement to Command. Norton
AntiVirus is available for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and XP as well as
Mac OS 9 or higher.

Norton AntiVirus is available from a variety of locations:

--The Lehigh CD. Faculty and staff can purchase the Lehigh CD from the
Lehigh bookstore for $5 and students may pick one up from Margaret
Petrovich in 394 Fairchild Martindale (students who pay the technology
fee are entitled to one for free). In addition to Norton AntiVirus, the
Lehigh CD includes applications such as Netscape 7.0 and 4.7 as well as
the Novell Client, Quicktime 6, Acrobat Reader and Winzip 8.0.

--Fairchild Martindale Library Circulation Desk. The Norton AntiVirus CD
may be checked out from the Fairchild Martindale Library circulation
desk for a limited period of time.

--Lehigh Security Webpage. Norton AntiVirus may be downloaded from the
Lehigh security webpage http://www.lehigh.edu/security/

Instructions for uninstalling Command AntiVirus and installing Norton
are also available at the Lehigh security webpage. If you have
questions, please contact the LTS helpdesk at 8-HELP or your LTS
computing consultant.
