NORTON ANTI-VIRUS
Lehigh's current Command Anti-virus license expires on May 30, 2003.
Norton Anti-virus is available to the campus community as a replacement
for Command. All users at Lehigh who wish to use a university supported
anti-virus software package must uninstall Command Anti-virus and
install Norton by May 30th. Norton Anti-virus may be obtained for
on-campus Windows computers through the "install software" option that
is located on the Windows START menu, through the Lehigh Norton website
at http://www.lehigh.edu/security/norton, the circulation desk in
Fairchild Martindale Library, and is available on the WIRED CD. For
on-campus Macintosh users or off campus Windows and Macintosh users, the
installation media is available through the Lehigh Norton website or the
circulation desk in Fairchild Martindale Library.

Before installing the corporate edition of Norton Anti-virus, all
anti-virus software packages must be removed. This includes Command
Anti-virus as well as any commercial Norton Anti-virus packages
(commercial versions of Norton typically come pre-installed on new
computers). Please note that when a commercial version of Norton
Anti-virus is removed, there are two parts that must be uninstalled -
the Norton program itself as well as the Norton Live update program.
Comprehensive Norton installation documentation is available on the
Lehigh Norton website at http://www.lehigh.edu/security/norton. For
installation assistance, please contact your departmental LTS computer
consultant (staff/faculty), the appropriate WIRED consultant (for
students), or the help desk at 8HELP.

SECURITY TIMEOUT AT THE PUBLIC SITES
To address security concerns, a password-protected screen saver has been
implemented at the public sites and computing classrooms. Computers will
"time out" to a screensaver after a period of inactivity. The timeout
settings are as follows:

--Public sites will time out after 10 minutes of inactivity.
--In classrooms that are also public sites (e.g., Whitaker 257, Grace
28, RBC 50/60, Iacocca, B103, EWFM 292), all stations (including the
instructor's station) will "time out" after 10 minutes.
--Computers in technology classroom podiums or instructor desks will
time out after 2 hours.

Below are some common questions about the screen saver and the answers.

1. What does the saver look like?
You will see a "workstation is locked" message. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to go
to the login page. If your userid is already present at the login
prompt, retype your password and press <ENTER>.

2. The userid in the login box is not mine. What should I do?
If a user forgets to log off a public site computer and the screen saver
appears, you will see someone else's userid in the login. In this case,
you must press and hold the power button for several seconds to power
off the computer, and then turn it back on again in order to login.

If you have difficulty, contact the Help Desk at 8-4357.

ALTERNATIVE TO SENDING LARGE ATTACHMENTS VIA E-MAIL
All users have a 20M quota for their e-mail Inboxes. If you send large
e-mail attachments to other Lehigh users, you may cause them to exceed
this quota, depending on how much mail they already have in their
Inboxes. This results in their inability to receive new mail until their
quota is temporarily increased. An alternative to sending large
attachments via e-mail is to save the file in your H:\Public folder. The
recipient can retrieve files from this location by clicking Start > LU
Public, and then searching for your User ID. All Lehigh users have
access to your Public folder, so be sure you only put files there that
you intend to make public. The total amount of space allocated to files
and folders on your H: drive (including the Public folder), is 250M.

For assistance with this procedure, please contact your computing
consultant.

LIBQUAL SURVEY COMING MID MARCH
In mid March Library and Technology Services will be conducting a
web-based survey of all students and faculty. This survey is designed to
assess important aspects of the Lehigh University libraries such as
print and electronic collections, facilities, service, and convenience.
It is approximately 25 questions long and takes an average of 13 minutes
to complete. INDIVIDUALS WHO COMPLETE THE SURVEY AND GIVE THEIR EMAIL
ADDRESS AT THE END IN THE SPACE PROVIDED WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE
DRAWING OF TEN GIFT CERTIFICATES OF $100 EACH TO AMAZON.COM.

The survey will allow LTS to compare service performance with user
expectations and to make broad comparisons with other academic libraries
since more than 220 academic institutions have conducted the same survey
in recent years and an additional 312 institutions plan to do so this
spring. Known as "LibQUAL+", the survey has been developed over a period
of three years by the Association of Research Libraries and the Texas
A&M Library. All responses are completely confidential.
