Library and Technology Services CONTENTS: --LTS PILOT TESTING CAMPUS PORTAL --NORTON TO REPLACE COMMAND AS ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE --DIGITAL BRIDGES SITE LIVE --MICROSOFT PROJECT 2002 NOW AVAILABLE --TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE LEARNING CENTER COMPLETED --NEW LAPTOPS AVAILABLE AT THE LTS MEDIA CENTER Subscription, archive and contact information is at the bottom of this digest. LTS PILOT TESTING CAMPUS PORTAL Pilot groups consisting of faculty, students and staff have initiated testing and comment on the Lehigh University campus-wide portal project, scheduled to go live in January 2003. The portal provides tools for calendaring, group communications, targeted messages, and web-based email, as well as content areas that point to personalized information channels. As part of the project, Library and Technology Services (LTS) has been involved in a development relationship with Campus Pipeline, now part of the SCT corporation (the company that creates the Banner software). During the summer, LTS beta tested Pipeline's Luminis, a customizable portal product based on open standards. In advance of the pilot, LTS has developed content channels and default user interfaces for various types of users. It is anticipated that the campus portal page will serve as Lehigh's primary internal web page. To take a look at the pilot version, point your browser to http://portal.lehigh.edu NORTON TO REPLACE COMMAND AS ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE Library and Technology Services (LTS) has recently signed a two-year contract with Symantec Corporation for Norton Anti-Virus software (to replace the current license for Command Anti-Virus). Similar to the Command license, the new Norton license will cover faculty/staff campus and home computers as well as student and public sites computers. Norton Anti-Virus product updates and definition files will be set to automatically update from the Symantec website therefore reducing the administrative time and expense of managing the updates at Lehigh. Currently, Norton is being installed on faculty and staff computers on campus and the tentative date it will be made available for students and faculty/staff home users, via download and media checkout, is November 15, 2002. Lehigh's current Command Anti-Virus license expires May 30, 2003, so all users that are currently using Command Anti-Virus need to uninstall Command and install Norton by that date. Documentation for uninstalling Command and installing Norton will be made available prior to November 15. All questions regarding the Norton Anti-Virus license or installation may be directed to Gale Fritsche at gdf2@lehigh.edu. DIGITAL BRIDGES SITE LIVE The Digital Bridges Web site was launched in June 2002. The new Web site at http://bridges.lib.lehigh.edu is an online collection of 19th century American bridge engineering manuals, reports, and textbooks drawn from Lehigh University Libraries' Special Collections. The site provides a uniquely rich interactive research tool for students, historians, and engineering professionals. It is representative of the new genre of web-based scholarship facilitated by librarians that is emerging in many disciplines. MICROSOFT PROJECT 2002 NOW AVAILABLE Microsoft Project can be used to collaborate on projects, manage schedules and resources, and analyze project information. As an addition to Lehigh University's Microsoft Campus Agreement, MS Project Standard 2002 may be used on campus. It can be installed using the Install Software icon located on your computer desktop. Microsoft Project is also available to faculty and staff for work at home use. The software CD may be borrowed from the EWFM Library circulation desk. TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE LEARNING CENTER COMPLETED The recently completed new Technology Resource Learning Center, an integral component of the Lehigh Lab, is located alongside the Media Center in Fairchild Martindale Library. This space contains: a work area for faculty developing multimedia projects, a state-of-the-art classroom/conference room with I2 and video conferencing capabilities, consulting space, enhancements to the current Media Center public area for students working on multimedia projects and an office for the faculty fellow. Jack Lule, Professor of Journalism and Communication, has agreed to serve as the first Lehigh Lab Faculty Fellow. NEW LAPTOPS AVAILABLE AT THE LTS MEDIA CENTER The Library and Technology Services (LTS) Media Center has upgraded its rental laptops, and now offers fifteen new Gateway Solo 1450SE Pentium III laptops for the established borrowing service. The laptops can be used for modem access and campus network access (including wireless). Both floppy and CD ROM drives are available. The borrowing rates for academic or university-related functions are: $5 per day, $25 per week, with a 2 week maximum. The laptops come equipped with standard software such as Microsoft Office and Web browsers, and additional software can be installed through the Install Software icon (provided the laptop is on the network). After circulating, all laptop software (including the operating system) is reloaded, and the previous borrower's files are deleted (do not store your information on the laptop's hard drive). ******************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
