CENTRA CREATES ONLINE CLASSROOM In order to extend the live, online capabilities of University-sponsored web-based programs, Lehigh has licensed the Centra Symposium collaboration software. Centra Symposium provides a live, web-based environment that can support instruction, presentations, and meetings. Ideal for highly interactive team collaboration, virtual classrooms, and hands-on training applications, the Lehigh license accommodates up to 25 simultaneous users. This full-featured tool includes: two-way voice chat, presentation slide display, web site viewing, a polling feature to gather feedback from participants and the ability to share computer applications. It also has the ability to record sessions for later playback to accommodate people who cannot attend a live event or to facilitate the review of difficult or complex material. These robust collaboration tools are exceptionally easy to use and require very little advance preparation. Centra Symposium will be running on a server based at Lehigh, with training and support available on campus through the Instructional Technology consultants. There is a sliding scale fee per class/event for its use to cover the continuing costs of software maintenance. Classes in the College of Business and Economics have already planned to use it for the fall semester and others are actively investigating its use. To learn more, contact an Instructional Technology consultant. OVER YOUR MAIL SERVER QUOTA? BUMP IT UP! LTS now offers a do-it-yourself temporary quota increase, available from the account page (http://www.lehigh.edu/account) Users having problems receiving and/or reading email because their Mail Server (aka Network Server) disk usage has approached or exceeded the allowed quota, can now choose "bump quota" on the account page to increase their quota for 4 hours. Users can bump their quota only once per 4-hour period. During that time users should take steps to reduce their quota by deleting unneeded mail messages, expunging (purge/compact/etc.) folders to permanently remove deleted messages, emptying trash, removing obsolete mail folders, and removing old network server files. For help with the cleanup process, contact the Help Desk at 8-HELP (4357). REMEDYWEB: SUBMIT PROBLEM REPORTS OVER THE WEB The Help Desk provides support by phone, in person, and over email. Now users can submit *non-urgent* problem reports to the Help Desk over the Web. Go to the account page at http://www.lehigh.edu/account and select Remedy (last link on the page). Follow the instructions to describe the problem, making sure to check the contact information and update it if necessary. After submitting the problem, note the ticket number. Help Desk staff will review the report within 4 hours (weekdays only) and either assign it to the appropriate LTS group, or contact you if there are questions. If you have further questions about this service, contact the Help Desk at 8-HELP (4357). H: DRIVE SPACE INCREASED TO 250 MEGABYTES In the past faculty and staff were given a file space allocation of 100 megabytes on the Home server, represented by the LAN drive letter "H". This space allocation has recently been increased to 250 megabytes. Saving files on the H: drive carries three great benefits: 1. Files are stored in a remote location, backed up nightly, and can be recovered if you accidentally delete a file. 2. Files are available from any networked computer on campus. You can edit a file at one location and open it at another. No disks to carry! 3. All files are scanned nightly for viruses. LTS encourages you to use your H: drive. Someday, you may be glad you did! PHOTOCOPIERS, RATES, AND CARDS TO CHANGE The heavily used photocopiers at Fairchild Martindale Library will soon be replaced by new state-of the-art digital copiers. New digital copiers are expected to be installed throughout the Fairchild Martindale Library in September. The new Toshiba eStudio digital copiers are state-of-the-art machines with superior resolution and copy quality. They are also speedy. For multiple copies, the rate is 28 pages a minute and for a single copy, it takes only 3.9 seconds. Libraries with public digital copiers report fewer repair problems, increased uptime, and greater user satisfaction. Linderman Library is not slated to receive new copiers at this time because the Sharp copiers there are still in very good condition and do not need frequent repair. When the new copiers roll in, so will a new price structure. The price per copy for a member of the Lehigh community using a GoldPlus account or a COPICO debit card will rise from 10 to 13 . The price of copies made with cash will increase from 15 to 20 . This is the first increase in 5 years and is necessary to provide acceptable service in the current copy vending market. Another upcoming change for photocopy service is the phasing out of the set value Copico cards sold at the libraries by the end of the semester. Although the new copiers will accept coins, cash, GoldPlus accounts, and Copico cards, they will no longer encode extra value on Copico cards. Card holders should plan on using the existing value on their Copico card during the fall semester and switching to GoldPlus for copying by December 2002. Those without access to a GoldPlus account will continue to be able to borrow a GoldPlus card at the front desk of either library. NEW EJOURNALS: ACS JOURNAL ARCHIVES & PSYCARTICLES LTS now provides access to the American Chemical Society Journal archives. The archives cover articles from the year the journals were first issued up to the present. Coverage of the Journal of the American Chemical Society dates back to 1879. For a listing of journals and the dates of coverage, see http://pubs.acs.org/archives/what.html or, search the journal titles on ASA for coverage information as well as access. The task of scanning all this material was monumental; according to the ACS website, it involved "scanning a stack of paper 81 stories high--a towering challenge." Another new ejournal service this fall is PsycArticles (http://www.psycinfo.com/library/), which provides electronic access to American Psychological Association and other journals. To see the list of available titles and browse the table of contents visit http://www.psycinfo.com/library/browse/index.cfm?CFID=1419412&CFTOKEN=62366198 Search engines enable one to search full text as well as bring up corresponding PsycInfo abstracts. The individual journal titles are searchable in ASA. COMPUTING CLASSROOM AND SITE UPGRADES As part of the PC lifecycle upgrade plan, LTS replaced all Pentium II 400 MHz computers in registrar classrooms. These upgrades also occurred in PC classroom sites at the Rauch Business Center 50, 60, 70; EWFM Computing Center 292; Linderman Library, Media Center; Media Production; and the IMRC. These computers as well as all existing PCs at public sites have been upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP Pro. Eleven new registrar classrooms have been equipped with computing and presentation equipment including: Chandler 230; Iacocca 013; Maginnes Hall 483; Packard Lab 208; Rauch Business Center 241, 251, 260, 271; Sinclair 106; and Whitaker Lab 271, 207. In addition, projector upgrades were completed at Lewis Labs 270, Rauch Business Center 184, and Whitaker 303. The renovations at the Media Center in EWFM will be completed by the end of September and will become the Technology Resource Learning Center. The goal of the center is to assist faculty who wish to use technology to enhance and support the teaching and learning process. The center will include a technology-rich classroom, computers, scanners, a color printer, and a faculty workroom, with instructional technology consultants available to assist. Please refer to the classroom web site to obtain more details about the hardware installed at these locations at http://www.lehigh.edu/classrooms/sitenews99.html LINDERMAN GRADUATE STUDY/LOUNGE REFURBISHED A refurbished graduate student study/lounge in Linderman Library is now available for use. The study/lounge (room 203A) is located on the second floor of the rotunda, just at the top of the west staircase. Two new computers are available there for use by graduate students in an air-conditioned environment. The lounge space and desk configuration allow for small meetings and group project work. During September some "finishing touches" will be added such as a white board and additional lamps and tables.
