STUDENT USE OF LEHIGH PROVIDED ISP SERVICE DURING SUMMER BREAK In the near future an email message will go directly to each student who has the Lehigh-provided ISP service describing what will happen during the summer based on his or her particular situation. Please watch for that message for more specific information on this topic. A general description of procedures follows. 1. Lehigh-provided ISP service for off-campus students who paid the technology fee second semester will end June 3, 2002 for graduating seniors and graduate students receiving their degrees this June. 2. Returning students will have their existing FastNet accounts temporarily suspended on May 31st. These accounts will be automatically reopened at the beginning of the fall semester with the same address and password. 3. Returning students with existing FastNet accounts who are remaining in the Fastnet local calling area over the summer and wish to continue their ISP service at no charge, will be asked to respond to the email message they receive to indicate their desire to continue and to provide a summer address. Students must respond to that message in order to continue over the summer. Students can find out what the Fastnet local service area is by linking to: http://www.fast.net/access/dialup-access-num-1.asp Other questions should be directed to the Help Desk at 610-758-4357. AIP CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE The American Institute of Physics Conference Proceedings are now available online at http://proceedings.aip.org/ and are accessible through ASA, Lehigh's library catalog. This online access supplements the library's print subscription. Proceedings year 2000 to present (volumes 500 and higher) are available online. The search interface also enables searching of all proceedings from 1975-present and links to SPIN, which has abstracts of over 80 AIP, member, and other journals. HOW TO LOCATE AND INSTALL SOFTWARE DRIVERS When you add a new device to your PC, or make changes to your PC configuration, you may be called upon to install or upgrade your software device drivers. Instructions that accompany a newly purchased modem, printer, or scanner frequently refer to drivers. This may leave you wondering, "What the heck is a driver anyway"? For more information, including how to locate and install drivers visit http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/What's_a_Driver.html A NEW HOME FOR THE LIBRARIES' CURRICULUM MATERIALS COLLECTION The Libraries' collection of textbooks and other curriculum materials is now located on the main floor of the Fairchild-Martindale Library, west end of the north wing. Teacher's editions of K-12 reading, social studies, mathematics, language arts, and science texts are available there and are fully catalogued on ASA, Lehigh's Library Catalog. The materials in the collection may circulate for seven days; previously this collection was for reading room use only. Materials for special needs students are also in the collection. The Juvenile Books collection of award winning fiction and non-fiction for children and youth will be moved, to be shelved next to the CMC later in the semester. Read more about the Curriculum Materials Collection EMAIL ALERT SERVICES: DATABASES AND JOURNALS The library now provides a research guide that identifies email alerts of new literature. "Email Alert Services: Databases and Journals" appears on the library's list of Research & Finding Guides and Tools (http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/guides/findingtools.html). This guide identifies services that periodically alert users of new records, added to library databases, that satisfy user-specified criteria, and also identifies publisher web sites that provide email alerting services for new journal articles. These services are a great way to "auto-pilot" the task of keeping track of new literature in your field. EXHIBIT OF LU INCUNABULA Lehigh University in the Fifteenth Century is an exhibition taken from the more than 30 books in Special Collections printed before 1501. Known as incunabula or cradle printings , they mark the period during which printed books develop the attributes we ve come to expect: title page, indexes, even pagination. The earliest volume is a work by Pliny the Elder (Venice, 1469) and the latest a commentary by Apuleius (Bologna, 1500). The exhibition will also include the N rnberg Chronicle (Augsburg, 1497), famous for its elaborate illustrations. It opens April 29 in the Bayer Galleria, Linderman Library and runs through September 30. Hours are Monday-Friday 1-5 p.m. and by arrangement. "ALWAYS ASK FIRST": OPENING FILES & ATTACHMENTS IN NETSCAPE Many documents on the Web are available in familiar formats, such as MS WORD, Corel WordPerfect, or MS PowerPoint.
