NAME CHANGE On March 1st, Provost Ron Yoshida announced that Information Resources (IR) would change its name to Library and Technology Services. Thus the IR Digest becomes the LTS Digest with this issue. However, changing the name on stationary, business cards, the web, publications, and names of various distribution lists (like IR Digest) will take some time. We appreciate your patience with the process. Below is the text of Provost Yoshida's announcement. "I have accepted Bruce Taggart s recommendation to change the name of Information Resources to a more self-defining organizational title of Library and Technology Services. I have consulted with the Faculty Steering Committee which has endorsed this change. Bruce discussed this change with many faculty and staff members, and the Advisory Council for Information Services (ACIS). One of the main issues with the existing Information Resources name is that it does not clearly communicate to both internal and external constituencies what the organization does. The IR acronym also gets confused with International Relations and with Institutional Research because they use IR for an organizational abbreviation." TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE LEARNING CENTER During the summer the Media Center facility in Fairchild Martindale Library will undergo renovations to include a Technology Resource Learning Center. This Center will provide a physical space to focus the overall mission of supporting faculty and students in the advancement of teaching, learning, and research utilizing appropriate technologies and techniques. The renovations will include a classroom simulator and conference room, a faculty work area, and a consulting room. The current student services area will remain but be upgraded. Some administrative details are still being finalized for this highly collaborative effort. CHANGES TO ELSEVIER SCIENCE DIRECT In 2002, effective soon, the Elsevier Science Direct program has been altered by the publisher to limit electronic access for our campus community to the 300+ periodical titles to which Lehigh holds a subscription. A survey of usage and readership was conducted last year by librarians in concert with faculty to identify the core set of Elsevier titles for which subscriptions needed to be retained or added. Article-by-article access to the remainder of Elsevier s 1200 titles is no longer available directly from the Science Direct site. Functionally, the Science Direct site will look and work the same as it has over the past three years. The only difference is that if a user doesn't retrieve an article from the direct link, indicating that Lehigh has a subscription, entering an ID/password will not work. Please contact Interlibrary Loan to obtain copies of articles from any unsubscribed Elsevier journal. Questions about these changes may be directed to your client services librarian or to Christine Roysdon, LTS Director for Collection Management. TLTR AT LEHIGH The Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable (TLTR) is a national initiative sponsored by the TLT Group (http://www.tltgroup.org/) an affiliate of the American Association for Higher Education, whose mission "is to provide materials and services that enable and motivate institutions to improve teaching and learning with technology." The TLTR at Lehigh offers users of technology and newcomers to technology a way to share experiences and explore how to identify, select, and use a wide range of resources and tools to enhance teaching and learning. Through demonstrations of new and existing technology and regularly scheduled meetings, the group provides a forum for all users of technology to share their ideas and experiences. Well, 10 steps may seem like a lot, but these instructions start from scratch, with installing the Acrobat software from the campus LAN. The process is simple and will not hurt or affect the original document that is being converted. 1. If Adobe Acrobat is not installed on your PC, click on the Install Software icon (on most LAN-connected PCs on campus), select Adobe Acrobat 5.0, and install the software. 2. Reboot when the installation is complete. 3. Open the MS WORD document to be converted. 4. Under the File menu, select Print. 5. Check the Print to File checkbox, then select Acrobat Distiller from the drop-down menu. 6. Click OK. 7. Name the file and select the location where the file is to be stored on your hard disk. The file will have the extension .prn 8. Go to the START menu, select Adobe Acrobat, then Adobe Distiller. 9. In the File menu, select Open, and select the file just created in step 7. 10. Name the new file and select Save. By default, the file will have the extension .pdf. Remember to call the help desk at 8-4357 if encountering any problems.
