LEHIGH SELECTS A PORTAL VENDOR
Lehigh has entered into an agreement with Campus Pipeline to provide
portal software for the campus. Campus Pipeline is enterprise
integration software that serves as a foundation for the digital campus.
The software will bring together a number of elements such as web-based
mail, calendaring, targeted announcements, web content management, and
group communication tools. The overall goal of the project is to give
campus constituents anytime, anywhere access to an institution's
information, services, and communities. It is envisioned that the portal
will replace Lehigh's current internal web page and provide a central
point of access for information. During the month of February focus
group sessions were held with faculty, staff, and students to determine
the current needs at Lehigh and the types of information that client
would like to see incorporated into the portal. The initial plans are to
pilot test the software in the spring of 2002 and roll out Lehigh's
first campus portal in July.

WINDOWS XP SUPPORT ANNOUNCEMENT
Windows XP is the latest Microsoft operating system, replacing Windows
98, Windows 2000, and Windows ME. Over the next six months, IR will add
support for Windows XP Professional. This summer IR will be upgrading
all public site and classroom computers to Windows XP. Please review the
information below for more details. The upgrade will particularly impact
the management of IR-maintained public sites. Instructors are encouraged
to pay close attention to the section on these changes.

DATABASES ON TRIAL
The Trials page,
http://www.Lehigh.EDU/%7Einref/databases/trialspage.html established
last year features new library databases of potential interest to the
Lehigh community. At the present time, four services are featured, one
each in history and education, and two of a more general nature. It's a
frequently changing descriptive list and should be visited often.
Faculty and students are invited to make comments and suggest new
database possibilities for this page. See if there's something for your
courses or research! Purchase decisions are heavily influenced by trial
input from the community.

SPARC INVITATION - THURSDAY, MARCH 21
In fall 2001, Lehigh University became a member of SPARC, (Scholarly
Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, http://www.arl.org/sparc/)
an organization that has undertaken several bold initiatives to "return
science to scientists." Julia Blixrud, SPARC's Assistant Director/Public
Programs, will visit Lehigh on Thursday, March 21 to meet with faculty,
staff and students in two public events.

1. At noon, in the Bayer Family Room, Linderman Library (3rd floor
west), Ms. Blixrud will outline SPARC'S efforts to restore ownership of
scholarly information to the people who create it -- university faculty.
This brown-bag lunch is sponsored by the Friends of the Lehigh
University Libraries.

2. At 2PM, also in the Bayer Family Room, Ms. Blixrud will lead a more
detailed discussion of new programs for disseminating scholarship.
Faculty who edit journals, who have been involved on editorial boards of
journals, or who are active in the publication arena of scholarly
societies are particularly encouraged to attend.

SPARC's most visible activity to date has been the Alternatives Program,
which "encourages and supports projects that represent a direct and
strong competitive alternative to existing high-priced titles ."

CREATING LINKS TO PROQUEST
Faculty members, wouldn't it be helpful to be able to put links in your
web pages that instantly take your students to the full electronic texts
of articles? The Proquest databases (Periodicals Abstracts and ABI
Inform) have recently made some changes to their process for doing just
that. To create persistent links it is necessary to use their Site
Builder feature and a passworded account. These links will then endure
for several years. (Proquest/ABI has a generic method of creating
durable links, but these only last for 30 days.) Contact a Client
Services Librarian to obtain the account number and password and then
follow the steps in the Guide to Creating Durable Links we have
prepared.

NEW PUBLIC SITES
Several new public sites have been completed by Information Resources
recently. Some were cooperatively funded with other campus departments
and some are "kiosk" sites limited to one URL.

1) 4 PCs in Admissions areas in the Alumni Memorial Building for use by
prospective students and other visitors -- funded by IR, Admissions, and
the Vice Provost for Research.

2) Two PCs for student use on the southwest corner of the 2nd floor of
the University Center, near the Peer Tutoring Center.

3) 5 PCs in Saucon Village for use of residents (Building 11, Room 121).

WANT TO GO WIRELESS?
If you have a laptop and are interested in Lehigh's wireless services,
help is here! Just call (758-HELP) or email the helpdesk
(helpdesk@lehigh.edu) for assistance. Helpdesk staff can answer general
questions about wireless access locations and services. Or, make an
appointment with one of the helpdesk specialists for assistance with
installing/configuring wireless. For more information on wireless, visit

DIGITAL DISSERTATIONS -- FIRST 24 PAGES ONLINE AND FREE!
The Digital Dissertations database available at
http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inref/databases/index.html is an authoritative
source for information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses.
This Web-based database allows users to purchase and download recent
digital dissertations online. Dissertations published after *1996 are
available in digital (TIFF or pdf) format, and Lehigh dissertations can
be downloaded by Lehigh affiliates at no cost. On-campus users or those
dialing in through Lehigh's modem pool will automatically be recognized
as Lehigh affiliates. Off-campus users who are using another ISP (e.g.,
Fastnet, MSN, etc.) will need to set up a proxy server.

Update on Digital Dissertations services:
The first 24 pages of electronic dissertations can be viewed and printed
for free. Recently, Lehigh users have reported problems printing the
previews. Some combinations of browsers and printers do not seem to
print the document correctly. If this happens, try this workaround:

1. Within the dissertation database, search for the desired
dissertation.
2. When the desired citation is on the screen, select "24 page preview".

3. Select "Print all preview pages."
4. Select "File", then "Save As."
5. Name the page and save it in HTML format (this is the default).
6. Open MS WORD and call up the dissertation preview file that has just
been saved.
7. Select print from the file menu and print as usual.

For more information about this database, see
http://www.Lehigh.EDU/%7Einref/databases/digdiss.html

*some dissertations published in 1996 are also available

PRODUCTIVITY TIPS
Windows Tips:

To calculate how much space is used by files/folders, select all the
files and folders (shift+click to block, or ctrl+click to select one or
more non-consecutive files/folders). Right click on the highlighted area
and left click properties. Total size will appear in the next window.

If you re like many owners of newer PCs, you ve probably wondered about
the purpose of the Windows keys on the keyboard. In case you haven t
noticed them, they re among the few keys adorned with icons, and they re
located on either side of the ALT keys. While WIN keys dress up the
keyboard, they serve a practical purpose as well, providing easy
shortcuts for some basic Windows functions. Some Windows key
combinations:

Win+M minimizes all open programs at once.
Shift+Win+M maximizes them again.
Win+E opens Windows Explorer.
Win+F opens the Find window

VIRUS AVOIDANCE TIP
Do not assume that an email is OK if it's from someone you know. Many
virus authors exploit this assumption and write virus scripts to copy
email addresses from your address book so they look like they are
legitimate when they are passed to other people.

Virus hoaxes are almost as prevalent as viruses themselves. If you
receive an email warning you of a virus outbreak, either check with your
computing consultant or look at the security web page at
http://www.Lehigh.EDU/security/hoaxes.html to see if it's legitimate. Do
not forward virus hoaxes. It needlessly worries others and can possibly
cause more harm than good.
