Subscription, archive and contact information is at the bottom of this digest. CAPPUCCINO AND ART IN FAIRCHILD LIBRARY The Fairchild Martindale Library lower level lounge has been remodeled with carpeting, new lighting, chairs, tables, and network connections. A new coffee machine with wider choices, including cappuccino, has been installed and a snack machine is expected soon. Under the direction of Theater Professor Drew Francis eight students are beginning the creation of a mural on the main wall that will feature the impact of literacy and reading with motifs from around the campus. Stop by and see this exciting "work in progress" while you sip your cappuccino! AAAS SCIENCE JOURNAL NOW AVAILBLE ONLINE The Lehigh Libraries now have an online subscription to the well-known journal Science from 1995 to the present. This online version gives access to the journal on the day it is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, with assistance from Stanford University's HighWire Press. It enhances the already extensive electronic coverage of Science for the period 1880-1996 through JSTOR, which offers a searchable electronic database containing the scanned images of the back issues of a large number of major research journals in a variety of academic disciplines. The new subscription enables readers to see supplemental data not available in the print version. (Lehigh also has print coverage of Science, extending back to 1883.) Both the new subscription and Lehigh's JSTOR edition may be accessed from the Science links on the alphabetical listing of electronic journals available on the library home page. From the new Science Magazine subscription, users can link to Science Online, which provides access to other resources, such as a daily news service and career-related information. For more information about the new subscription, see http://www.aaas.org/science/global/gsol_contents.html#science This year the Friends of the Lehigh Libraries have chosen to support this acquisition financially because it is broadly representative of the fields of science and because it offers a "model" of electronic archiving. OUR NATION'S TRAGEDY RESOURCES http://www.lehigh.edu/library/infodome/nationstragedyresources.html A collection of online sources about the events and aftermath of September 11, 2001, has been added to the Library Services Home Page. The emphasis is on academic resources for researching and for understanding the terrorist attacks on our country. The collection links to and is linked from the University's Our Nation's Tragedy and the Lehigh Family pages. NEW FILE RECOVERY TOOL The Lehigh IR Help Desk now has a new file recovery tool for restoring corrupted WORD files. The software, called WordRecovery, should help increase the success rate with a frustrating but common problem, file corruption in Microsoft WORD documents. The Help Desk assists with file recovery by appointment or on a walk-in basis between 9am and 6pm (dependent on staff availability). Although our recovery rate is good, remember that there are no guarantees that a particular file can be recovered. Of course, the best protection against lost data is making frequent backups. Files stored on the campus LAN space are backed up nightly, and LAN storage avoids the problems that occur when files are saved and transported from PC to PC via floppy disk. For more file protection hints, see the File Recovery Information Page at http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inhelp/faq/qa/datarecovery.html THE DOG ATE MY FLOPPY! Shared LAN space for students: Now 100 M per student! Do students complain of lost homework due to bad floppy disks, viruses, and other catastrophes? Help students avoid these problems by encouraging them to make use of their personal file space on the campus LAN. When students log into any campus networked PC with their userid, they have 100 megabytes of space on the LAN for storage and file sharing. This space, which is accessible from all WIRED or public site PCs, is backed up nightly and scanned for viruses. Equally important, the LAN space alleviates the need for storing and transporting valuable files on floppy or zip disks. This practice can be risky if the student does not make frequent backups and treat the disks properly. Students can find their public space by clicking on START and selecting LAN HOME DIRECTORY. Files placed in the "public" folder within this directory will be viewable by other Lehigh account holders. To view a list of other students' public space, select LU PUBLIC. ******************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
