WELCOME AND WELCOME BACK! We welcome all new students and faculty and encourage them to be IRDIGEST subscribers. This is one of the best ways to keep up to date on new resources. Welcome back to those of you who have been away over the summer. There are many new services, databases, and facilities, as you will see below. VIRTUAL REFERENCE SERVICES Over the summer, Lehigh's librarians introduced a Live Online Reference Service using software from InstantService.com. The new service provides live real time digital reference services for students, faculty, and staff. Through the web-based software, librarians can converse with users about questions via text chat and send web pages to their computers. Users are emailed a transcript of their session. To access the Live Online Reference Service click on the Lehigh Reference icon found on the Library Services http://www.lehigh.edu/library/library.html, Infodome Research Advisor http://www.lehigh.edu/library/infodome/, and Databases http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/databases/index.html pages. The icon is active only when the service is staffed. The service targets questions about library services, databases, electronic resources, web searches and advice on beginning research. Referrals will be made for in-depth research consultations. Available to on and off campus users, this service will be especially helpful to remote users who may not have a second phone line to call for library reference assistance. GETTING CONNECTED AT LEHIGH Getting Connected@Lehigh, a 4 page introduction to IR services aimed at new students and faculty, is now in PDF format on the Web at http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inhelp/services/LUconnectpdf.PDF PHOTO COPY CHARGING OPTIONS The new GoldPLUS debit system can be used for many services throughout campus, including photocopying in the libraries. Faculty and staff often inquire about changes in photocopy options at EWFM and Linderman. Now users can see a list of frequently asked questions about photocopying at http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/copycard.htm NEW LIBRARY DATABASES Try these new databases, accessible from the library database page: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/databases/index.html Early English Books Online (EEBO) contains the full text of over 125,000 titles published in England from 1475 through 1700. Featured in EEBO are works by Malory, Bacon, More, Erasmus, Boyle, Newton, Galileo; musical exercises by Henry Purcell and novels by Aphra Behn; prayer books, pamphlets, and proclamations; almanacs, and calendars and many other primary sources. The most exhaustive research requirements of graduate scholars for primary materials can now be fulfilled! All subject areas are covered. Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts covers anthropological linguistics, discourse analysis, learning disabilities, lexicography, morphology, philosophy of language, phonetics, and poetics. Linguistics fields covered include descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics. Statistical Universe indexes and abstracts the statistical information published by the U.S. government, international organizations and, to a more limited extent, the statistical publications of private organizations and state governments. The "Power Tables" section provides direct access to selected full text electronic tables, and links to full text are also available for some of the indexed sources. Coverage of federal statistics extends back to 1974, business, association and state government data to 1980 and international agencies to1983. This international agency coverage provides a comprehensive index to the IIS (Index to International Statistics) microfiche collection housed in Fairchild-Martindale Library. Ulrich s Periodical Directory (Ulrichsweb) provides detailed information on serials published throughout the world on all subjects, updated weekly. Entries include basic publication/subscription information, online status, history, circulation, editors, email and web addresses. NEW CIRCULATING SOFTWARE MANUALS/GUIDES COLLECTION In response to user queries and an analysis of interlibrary loan requests, a collection of current software manuals and popular software guides has been initiated. The books are on 7-day reserve in Fairchild-Martindale Library. The collection currently encompasses books on widely-used products as Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Microsoft Access, as well as manuals for more specialized software including ANSYS, Autocad, LabView, and SPSS. All books are cataloged and can be searched in the ASA catalog simply by entering the name of the software, for example, Adobe Photoshop. Suggestions for additions to the collection are welcome. NEW COMPUTERS IN FAIRCHILD AND LINDERMAN LIBRARIES More than 70 new computers have been installed in the Fairchild Martindale Library over the summer. All the new computers in Fairchild Library also have significantly enlarged work space around them. For this reason, they are more dispersed throughout the Library than previously although the aggregate number of computers available is the same. New 4-machine stand-up "express computing" counters have been added on the Fairchild entry level and in the Linderman Lobby. These areas are designed for short tasks such as checking email or making quick changes in a document. Both Libraries also have wireless laptops for short term use; they will connect to the campus LAN in some areas of both buildings and outside in the Fairchild plaza. All the computers in Linderman Library and the Fairchild Computing Center were upgraded last year. There are also more than 150 other new computers and printers in other public computing sites across the Lehigh University campus.
