STORING THINGS IN TRASH? FILE UNDER NEVER! Occasionally, the Help Desk receives calls from Lehigh staff, faculty, and students who are using Trash folders to temporarily store messages or documents which may still be needed. This is a very dangerous practice. Whether it is the Windows desktop Recycle Bin, or the MacOS desktop Trash can, or the Trash folder within the email program, the TRASH is not an ordinary location. It represents space that is occupied by something no longer needed; space that is specifically marked to be reclaimed. In other words, items in the trash have been DELETED. Items in the trash continue to exist only to allow for possibly undoing the deletion in case it was done by mistake (and users should not count on the grace period for deciding to undo this mistake to last for too long). It should not be a shock when items in the trash are lost: presumably, that's why they were put there. If the real need is for a temporary storage location for items that are pending review, create a separate location for that specific purpose. On the desktop or in email, create a new folder. Call it something like "Pending" or "For-Review" or "To-be-discarded-later" or whatever makes sense. (At least for email, it is probably wise to avoid having spaces in the folder names, use hyphens or underscores instead.) New folders in Windows can be created in a number of ways: --Right-click on the desktop or in the blank area within a folder, select "New", and choose "Folder". --From the "File" menu in Windows Explorer you can select "New", and then "Folder". In Netscape Messenger, a new folder can be created for mail messages by selecting "New Folder " from the "File" menu. For assistance with managing files, contact the Help Desk (758-4357) or a computing consultant. SETTING UP A NETSCAPE MESSENGER PROFILE: AN UPDATE Setting up a new profile in Netscape Messenger is a straightforward process. The steps are outlined in the document "Using Netscape Communicator at Lehigh" at http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/nsfiles/nsfall2000-2.htm#15 . Now that Lehigh has instituted additional security measures, users will need to perform a few extra steps each time a profile is set up. A new profile will not work until following the security setup instructions in the section labeled "Configuring Messenger" found in the same document (http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/nsfiles/nsfall2000-2.htm#5) Profile setup review: Most PCs are set up so that a user can create a profile by going through the START menu to Programs/Netscape Communicator/Utilities/Profile Manager. Profiles are located in the following folders on the desktop: Windows\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Users\profilename Mac System Folder:Preferences:Netscape Users:profilename For assistance with profile setup/configuration, contact the Help Desk at 8-4357. WHAT'S MY DISK QUOTA? Lehigh computer users have access to several file storage areas (e-mail, AFS, Compute Server and LAN), each with unique disk space quotas. A "What's What" list of these areas, along with quota and other important information, can be found at http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/quotatable.html TABLE OF IR SOFTWARE SUPPORT LEVELS In Spring 2000, the Advisory Council for Information Services (ACIS) passed ACIS Policy #1, Software Policy (http://www.lehigh.edu/~ludoc/user_services/software/supportpolicy.html) ..The document outlines IR acquisition and review policies and the assignment of support levels for software used by Lehigh University faculty, students and staff. The support level document, updated annually, informs users about support for individual software products and directs them to appropriate in-house experts. The recently updated Consultant Support Specialties & Software Support Levels may be viewed at http://www.lehigh.edu/~ludoc/user_services/software/support.html FINISH THOSE FOOTNOTES One of the most frustrating parts of being a student author, particularly late at night, is having to wrestle with proper citation and footnoting form for references, especially references to Web resources of various types. From the Lehigh Library Services web site, users can connect to the Libraries' page on Footnote and Citation Style Guides at http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/footnote/ . The page contains links to online resources that provide tips on citing and footnoting in styles such as APA, Chicago, and MLA. It also includes links to several sites that furnish detailed instructions for citing Web and other online sources. Style guidelines for citing and footnoting in particular fields such as Chemistry or Anthropology are also outlined. SMALL GROUP COLLABORATION ROOMS The existing eight small group collaboration rooms in Fairchild Martindale Library have recently been enhanced with whiteboards and LAN access. Two currently have PCs as well. They are ideal spots for students to finish collaborative projects or to study together for final exams. Students or faculty can reserve the rooms at the Fairchild Circulation Desk up to 24 hours in advance for blocks of several hours. Laptops for use in these rooms can be borrowed from the Media Center in the lower level of Fairchild Martindale Library. One small group collaborative room is located on the top floor of the Mart Wing (room 628). The other rooms are at the far west end of the upper floors of the Fairchild wing (rooms, 596-599, 695-696, 796). Contact Gail Kriebel at 83028 or the Circulation Desk at 83030 for more information. ******************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
