UPLOADING WEB PAGES SECURELY
Due to our recent security upgrades, users will need to change the way
they upload their web pages. Netscape Composer users need to change the
publishing destination from http:// to https://. FTP users, and users of
Dreamweaver and other web page management software, will need to switch
to SSH Secure File Transfer for uploading. For details, please visit:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/secure_up.html.

WEB AUTHORING SEMINARS TO BE HELD OVER WINTER BREAK
To accommodate those whose regular semester schedules keep them from
attending seminars, two of the most popular of LUIR's web authoring
seminars will be offered over Winter Break.

Introduction to Dreamweaver:
Wed. Jan. 3 & Fri. Jan. 5, 10:10 AM-12:00 PM - EWFM 292
Introduction to Web Authoring with Netscape:
Tues. Jan. 9 & Thurs. Jan. 11, 1:10 PM-3:00 PM - EWFM 292

Introduction to Web Authoring will help users start and/or edit their
Lehigh webpages using Netscape's Composer function. Introduction to
Dreamweaver is for those who have already started making webpages and
who want to learn Dreamweaver, a more full-featured web-authoring tool.

To register for either of these seminars, call Kelly Decker at x83990,
or email insem@lehigh.edu.

INTERNET BANDWIDTH EXPANSION
In late November Information Resources increased Internet bandwidth from
9 to 45 Mb/s (megabits per second). Last year IR increased the Lehigh
University bandwidth by 50% (from 6 to 9 mbs) because usage statistics
showed frequent congestion. The expanded 9 mbs bandwidth was quickly
congested as well, except during the summer and some "off hours" around
4 to 6 am. Bandwidth that is too narrow is experienced by the user as
general slowness or sluggishness when using the Internet. There can, of
course, be other causes of slowness such as the speed of one's computer
and the complexity of a particular Web page being downloaded. Readers
with a Lehigh University userid can view the changes that have taken
place by navigating to http://www.lehigh.edu/network. After
authentication, choose Network Statistics and then Throughput. This will
show the old AT&T connection still in place for the time being and the
new Fastnet, as well as a combination of the two.

EMERALD LIBRARY ONLINE (MCB UNIVERSITY PRESS PERIODICALS)
Lehigh has recently joined an agreement with other PALINET libraries to
provide electronic access to periodicals published by MCB University
Press, also known as the Emerald Library. Publications are focused on
business and technology. Some better-known titles include the European
Journal of Marketing; Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal;
and TQM Magazine. All 107 journals can be retrieved by title from ASA,
Lehigh's library catalog. The complete Emerald Library list is also
accessible from the Libraries' Electronic Journals by Publisher/Program
web page at http://www.lehigh.edu/library/ejournals/ejournalpub.html.

ETOOLBOX-LINKING TO YOUR WEB PAGES EASY AS 1-2-3
A new step-by-step guide, eToolbox
(http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/guides/tools.html) will enable faculty to
add links to library materials online directly from course web pages. By
using the easy to follow instructions, link resources such as full text
articles, journals, database search results, electronic books,
government documents, ERIC reports, research guides, online searching,
web evaluation guides and much more. Students will be encouraged to
access the latest and best in academic resources from around the world,
selected by your Lehigh CS Librarians. Check the eToolbox contents list
and examples to see how you can enrich your course web pages.

ENDNOTE INSTALLED
EndNote (version 4.0.1) is now available to the Lehigh campus. Graduate
students writing theses or dissertations and researchers writing
articles or books will find it especially useful. EndNote enables users
to organize citations; create bibliographies, insert citations into
papers, record notes about citations, and import references from library
databases.

Seminars about EndNote will be offered in the spring as part of the IR
seminar series. Library staff will be available to give presentations
about the software for departments. The PC version of the software is
currently available, while the MacIntosh version will be made available
later.

Further details about EndNote are available at the following webpage:
http://www.lehigh.edu/library/EndNote.html.

NETSCAPE 6 WARNING
Since the release of Netscape 6 last month, some users have asked
whether they should upgrade to this new version. Lehigh does not
recommend upgrading to Netscape 6 for the following reasons:

1. This version lacks LDAP directory support, a feature that allows
users to search the Lehigh directory for e-mail addresses.

2. Some users have reported problems with the display of certain web
pages, including the Lehigh homepage. Web pages, forms or tags coded
specifically for Netscape 4.x versions may not render well in Netscape
6.

3. Problems sending attachments have been identified.

4. The installation itself may cause problems on users PCs that may
ultimately warrant removal of the software.

For now, continue to use your current version of Netscape. If you have
any questions, please contact any Information Resources computing
consultant, or the Help Desk (x8HELP).
