LIBRARIES ACQUIRE E-BOOKS Over fifteen hundred electronic books are now accessible from ASA, Lehigh's Library Catalog. Readers may preview and check out these books just as they would a book in print on the library shelf. Lehigh librarians selected materials particularly suited to selective reading and full-text searching, including computer manuals, reference books and titles that enhance our current collections. Publishers represented include such presses as MIT Press and Oxford; computer books specialists such as Que, O'Reilly and Sams, and professional books from publishers such as Psychology Press and Teacher's College. The e-books, provided by netLibrary, cover a wide spectrum of subjects selected by Lehigh and other member libraries in Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.(PALCI). The James and Grace Schnabel Endowment funded Lehigh's acquisition of the e-book collection. To browse all netLibrary titles, enter "electronic book" as a search term in ASA, using the "Anywhere" search button. Go to http://www.lehigh.edu/~inlib/netlibraryfaq.html to see "Electronic Books at Lehigh." WIRELESS LAPTOPS AND LAN CARDS AVAILABLE AT LEHIGH Over the summer wireless LAN connections were installed in several locations around campus. The areas where wireless access is currently working include: Fairchild Martindale Library and Computing Center (Media Center, floors 3 and 4, and the courtyard), Linderman Library (reading room) Rauch Business Center Lobby, and the main lobby area in Maginnes. There are plans in place for the remainder of the fall semester and for the spring semester to expand wireless access in the 3rd floor lobby area in Packard Lab and additional areas in Linderman Library. Students, faculty and staff are now able to sign out laptops with wireless adapters from the Media Center. The software on the Media Center laptops has been updated to accommodate wireless connectivity. With these wireless laptops individual users can connect to both the Internet and the campus LAN from any of the wireless locations on campus. Individuals who already have their own laptops and want to use them at the wireless locations on campus can purchase a wireless LAN card. The Lehigh University Bookstore is currently able to special order the IR recommended wireless LAN adapter. Further information about wireless connectivity at Lehigh University is available at the Wireless web page http://www.lehigh.edu/wireless. This page contains information about the wireless hardware, installation instructions and drivers, as well as an updated list of wireless locations on campus. PHYSICAL CHANGES AT LINDERMAN LIBRARY Several physical changes are underway in Linderman to improve service and to accommodate wireless laptops that students and faculty can checkout from that location. The former circulation desk will serve as a single point of contact for users now that the tall shelving and other physical barriers have been removed to provide more overall visibility. Additional display cases will be more readily accessible in the Reading Room and the old reference desk will be repurposed to serve as an expanded service desk in Special Collection's Bayer Galleria space. Wireless access is available now in the Linderman lobby, Reading Room, and some other areas of the building for anyone with a laptop that has a wireless card and the proper software. The Linderman laptops will be available later in the semester. Contact the Help Desk for more information. INSTALLING NETSCAPE FROM THE FALL 2000 LEHIGH CD If you install Netscape v. 4.73 from the Fall Lehigh CD, avoid running the setup program from the main pop-up menu on the CD. There is a minor issue with the customized Netscape installation program available in the Off-campus Connection Software section of the main menu. Instead, run the setup program directly from the CD. Click Start, Run, then type or browse to D:\Netscape\cc32d473.exe and click OK. Follow the on-screen instructions. The installation issue will be corrected for subsequent copies of the Lehigh CD, beginning with the Spring edition. ATTENTION AOL USERS Some AOL users have experienced problems with their Lehigh dial-up connections after installing or upgrading to AOL 5.0 (see Help Desk document http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inhelp/faq/qa/aol.html) and a few have reported similar problems with AOL 6.0. Please keep this issue in mind when considering whether to upgrade or install AOL software. Note that Lehigh University does not support AOL and cannot always find solutions to problems caused by running AOL concurrent with other Lehigh-supported services. WININSTALL REPLACEMENT WinINSTALL, the program used to install and remove software has been replaced by a web-based system. When WinINSTALL is clicked, a new Install Software icon is added to the desktop. The user can simply double-click on the icon to go to the list of available software products, then click on the appropriate software title to go to an install/remove page. On that page is a brief summary of the program, location restrictions (if any), a link to the software manufacturer s web site, instructions for installing and removing the software and buttons labeled Install and Remove. When an "Install" or "Remove" button is clicked, a dialog box appears asking if the user wants to open the file or save it to disk. The user should select "open the file" and click OK. Another dialog box will ask whether or not to play the script. The response should be Yes to install/remove the software or No to cancel the installation/removal. WinINSTALL will continue to be available, but ONLY for removing programs initially installed via WinINSTALL. Programs cannot be installed using WinINSTALL. Older versions of programs should be removed via WinINSTALL before newer versions are installed via Install Software. Note: the Install Software application functions with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 2000 but not with Windows NT. If there is no WinINSTALL icon on the desktop, a user can still add the new Install Software icon and program. Go to http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inhelp/faq/qa/installsoftware.html for instructions. REMOVING MAIL NOTIFICATION ON NETSCAPE Some Netscape mail users have set up mail notification and this poses a security risk. Here are the instructions on how to remove the notification flag. http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/mail.notify.html HOLIDAY HOURS Nov. 22 26 Fairchild Martindale and Linderman Libraries Thanksgiving Nov. 22 Wednesday 8 am - 10 pm Nov. 23 Thursday CLOSED Nov. 24 Friday 8 am - 5 pm Nov. 25 Saturday Noon - 5 pm Nov. 26 Sunday* Noon - 2 am *Linderman Library closes at midnight ******************************************************************** Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
