Subscription, archive and contact information are at the bottom of this
digest.

IEEEXPLORE
IEEEXplore is the web site for IEEE publications: journals, conferences,
and standards. Although the site includes publications beginning with
1988, Lehigh's subscription BEGINS WITH 1998 AND IS RESTRICTED TO
JOURNALS AND CONFERENCES. Lehigh users are authorized by IP address. It
is possible to search the entire site (author, title, keyword), but
whenever a user tries to link to the abstract or full-text of a
reference outside the scope of the Lehigh subscription, the message
"Request Not Part Of Your Subscription" appears. The information that
follows covers all classes of users and can be confusing. To add to the
confusion, during the first few weeks of the service, the IEEE
authorization server was not working properly and would give or deny
access randomly. It appears to be working correctly now, but people who
used the service then may wonder why they no longer have access to
material they saw before.

SCIENCE DIRECT CONTENT AND USE DEMYSTIFIED
ScienceDirect is a web site maintained by Elsevier, publisher of
science, engineering, and social science journals. ScienceDirect also
serves as a distributor for other publishers. A search of the
ScienceDirect site retrieves references from all publishers in the
system, including material not electronically accessible through
Lehigh's subscription arrangement with Elsevier.

The ScienceDirect site has two modes of authorization: "Group-wide" and
"Personal." "Group-wide" gives full-text access to all of the Elsevier
journals to which Lehigh subscribes. Lehigh users also have "article by
article" access to any other Elsevier publication, but this requires the
"Personal" account. The latter is free, quick to obtain, and also
provides a table-of-contents and article alerting service. For further
details and clarification on access to other publishers' content, users
should consult the ScienceDirect Content and Use Guide
http://www.lehigh.edu/library/ejournals/scidirect.html.

IR offers seminars for using the special features of ScienceDirect. The
next one is scheduled for Friday, October 26. See Information Resources
Seminars (http://www.lehigh.edu/ir/irhelp/seminars.html) for more
information.

ACCESS SCIENCE --ONLINE MCGRAW-HILL ENCYCLOPEDIA
The electronic version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and
Technology, "Access Science" debuted this fall. In its print format,
this encyclopedia has been a traditional favorite of undergraduate
students needing an introduction to various science and technology
topics. The online version also offers full text search capabilities,
more frequently revised material, science and technology news, and links
to related web sites and is accessed from the library database page
(http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/databases/index.html).

"FOREVER OR FIVE YEARS, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST".
This quote from Jeff Rothenberg in his January 1995 Scientific American
article on digital preservation is the title for a new exhibit curated
by Philip Metzger, Curator of Special Collections, and Brian Simboli,
Science Librarian. The exhibit, on display until January, is located in
the Bayer Galleria, 3rd floor west, Linderman Library. From the
inscriptions on tablets to the invention of printing to the development
of modern digital and analog media, the communication of knowledge has
improved immeasurably in terms of what and how much can be stored and in
ease and flexibility of access. What has declined, however, is the
durability of the newer media. Digital media have a relatively limited
life. Although we know something about the Sumerians by reading their
still preserved inscriptions on clay, what will the future know about
us? This exhibit compares the strengths and weaknesses of formats for
transmitting knowledge and points out the daunting challenges of
preservation that electronic media have introduced. The Rothenberg
article was revised in 1999 and is available at
http://www.clir.org/cpa/film/future/ensuring.pdf.

POWERPOINT 2000: SAVING PRESENTATIONS IN HTML
Several users have noted that when saving presentations to HTML, they
cannot view the presentation in Netscape or earlier versions of Internet
Explorer. To save a presentation that can be viewed by a wide range of
browsers, follow these steps:

1. Under file, select Save as Web page...
2. In the dialog box, select the Publish option
3. In the next box, you are given these options for browser support:
--Microsoft IE 4.0 or later (high fidelity)
--Microsoft IE or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later
--All browsers listed above (creates larger files)

4. About the options:
a. The first option (IE 4.0 and up, high fidelity) uses the most disk
space overall, and creates about twice as many files. The quality of the
images may be better, and this option uses Javascript features.
b. The other two options ("IE or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later", or
"All browsers listed above") creates presentations that are very
similar. Both are smaller and contain fewer files than the first option
(IE 4.0 or later). Other differences:

--Animations, including slide transitions, are not supported (except
animated GIF pictures).
--GIF pictures might not be animated if the presentation is saved with a
screen size setting of 640 x 480 or less.
--The slide is not scaled to fit the Web browser window. It stays at a
fixed screen resolution.
--The presentation cannot be viewed full screen.
--You cannot open or close frames.
--The active slide title is not highlighted in the outline pane.
--The mouse does not highlight elements in the outline pane.
--Sounds and movies do not play.
--Some graphics will not look as good as they do in Microsoft Internet
Explorer 4.0 or later.
