IRDIGEST - September 22, 2000 - Lehigh University Information Resources CONTENTS: --EMAIL/TELNET CHANGES --SITE UPGRADES --ONLINE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY --TELEPHONE RATE REMINDER FOR STUDENTS --AOL AT HOME --NEW BEVERAGE POLICY Subscription, archive and contact information are at the bottom of this digest. EMAIL/TELNET CHANGES RECOMMENDED BY OCTOBER 2ND Changes must be made to the manner in which most individuals currently receive electronic mail regardless of whether they are using IMAP, POP Mail, or the text-based Network Server. Failure to make these changes could prevent the reception of electronic mail after October 2nd when various security measures are implemented at Lehigh. In addition Netscape Roaming Profiles will be phased out entirely by October 2nd. There are new options for using bookmarks at public sites without roaming. Information Resources is also in the process of converting all IR computing resources to require secure connections for both terminal access (i.e., telnet) and file transfers (i.e., ftp). In response to an SGI Security Advisory, telnet access to all Information Resources SGI workstations has already been disabled. Access to these systems, including the Compute Server cs0, can be obtained using various programs utilizing SSH (Secure Shell). Two of these which are readily available are Tera Term with SSH (available through WinInstall) and Putty. Questions pertaining to these issues can be directed to any Information Resources computing consultant, to the IR Help Desk at extension 8-HELP, or to security@lehigh.edu. Information and security tools are also available at the Security and Information Policy Web page at: http://www.lehigh.edu/security. UPGRADED PUBLIC SITES ( 191 new machines) AND TECHNOLOGY CLASSROOMS New Pentium III 600 Mhz PCs were installed this summer in the following computing sites: --Rauch Business Center 51 (37 machines) --E.W. Fairchild Martindale Computing Center Room 180 (33 machines) --Grace Hall 28 (33 machines) --Fritz Lab 605 (25 machines) --Packard Lab 502 (18 machines) --Mudd 464 (18 machines) --Media Center & Media Production Center (14 machines) --Whitaker Lab 257 (13 machines) Duplex printing was added to numerous sites. New HP printers with duplex printing were added to all sites listed above. One new technology classroom is completed at Coppee 307. Technology (new projection systems, etc.) was upgraded in four other classrooms: Iacocca Hall B103, IMBT Labs B101, Lewis Labs 316, and Neville 1. Experimentation is ongoing in some technology classrooms with dual projectors, smart boards, and digital document cameras. For complete facility details of sites and classrooms, consult: http://www.lehigh.edu/~lucc/operations/facilities/index.htm. ONLINE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY The Oxford English Dictionary http://dictionary.oed.com/entrance.dtl is available at last, and accessible from the LU library databases list (http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/databases/index.html.) The accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium, the OED covers the English language over time, showing current and historical word meanings and usage for over half a million words. Entries contain etymological analysis and are illustrated by over 2.5 million quotations taken from English language sources from around the world ranging from classic literature to current film scripts. The online Dictionary contains the complete Second Edition of 1989 plus its three-volume Additions Series. The OED is currently undergoing a complete A to Z revision toward an updated Third Edition by 2010. The online version of the OED contains the latest Third Edition revision and will be revised each quarter until the edition is complete. It's simple to use, cleanly and clearly laid out, and pleasantly browseable. RATE REMINDER FOR LEHIGH STUDENTS USING LEHIGH LONG DISTANCE SERVICE IN RESIDENCES Have you heard that Information Resources reduced student telephone rates effective August 1? All student calls within the U.S., as well as to Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Virgin Islands and Mexico, are just 9.5 cents per minute. Calls to Canada are just 18 cents per minute. Local toll calls (i.e. calls to communities within 610, 484, 215 or 267 that are just outside the local calling area) are 5 cents per minute. These rates are effective 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Newly discounted international rates are available to the entire university community. In addition, students, faculty and staff can also take advantage of unlimited local calling to the newly expanded local calling area. For more details, please go to Telecommunications Services' web site at http://www.lehigh.edu/phones/phones.html. If you have any questions, please contact the Billing Representative at X85005 or ll06@lehigh.edu. AOL AT HOME America Online (AOL) users: Important modem dialin info. Some Lehigh students and staff who use America Online (AOL) report difficulty dialing into the Lehigh modem pool. The AOL software can interfere with other Internet connections -- read more about the problem and the solutions. http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inhelp/faq/qa/aol.html NEW IR POLICY FOR BEVERAGES IN PUBLIC AREAS* As of the fall 2000 semester Information Resources modified its policy regarding beverages in public areas within the libraries and IR-managed computing sites. Beverages will be permitted in closed, spill-proof containers such as travel mugs, screw top containers, or pull-top plastic bottles. These containers are not permitted: soda cans, paper cups, and styrofoam or plastic beverage and coffee cups, even with plastic lids. As in the past, food is not allowed in the libraries or LUIR computing sites. The purpose of having restrictions on food and drink is to aid in the preservation and care of library materials and electronic equipment, to maintain pest-free buildings, to reduce damage to the furnishings, to minimize litter, and to ensure a clean environment for study and work. IR seeks continued compliance from the Lehigh community so that in the long term the environment in these facilities will foster scholarship and respect for others while protecting valuable collections and equipment. Recycle bins are now provided throughout the libraries and computing sites for beverage containers. Those who violate the Food and Drink Policy will be asked to move to a designated snack area (the lower lobby of Fairchild Martindale Library and the outer lobby of Linderman) or to leave the library or computing site, or to dispose of unauthorized food or drink. If you have any questions about the policy, please contact Gail Kriebel at 83028. Thank you for your cooperation. *Exceptions to this policy: The Special Collections, Media Center, and Media Production Services do not permit food or drink of any kind, at any time. ************************************************************************* Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly to the list.
