HELP DESK HINTS
This is a regular feature of two or three quick hints generated by staff
at the Information Resources Help Desk. A compendium of more of these
items can be found on the Help Desk FAQ (frequently asked questions)
page at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/

Going away for the summer? Set up your email!
Many faculty, staff, and students leave campus during the summer. To
avoid email "overflow" and possible disk quota problems, you can use one
of 3 options: mail forwarding, vacation notification, or IMP mail. A
description of each option is below:

Mail forwarding: This option allows email sent to your Lehigh account to
be forwarded to another email account. Mail does not accumulate in your
inbox, but is forwarded to an alternate account that you specify. Use
this option if you have an alternate mail account that you intend to
check periodically. To enable/disable this feature, click on the "mail
forwarding" hyperlink on the Lehigh Accounts
Management Web page http://www.lehigh.edu/account

IMP mail (Web-based mail): This option lets you read your Lehigh mail
through a Web-based email program called IMP. IMP can be accessed using
any Web browser/Internet Service Provider. This means you can access
your email without dialing into Lehigh's modem pool and incurring long
distance charges. To access and use IMP mail, go to
http://www.lehigh.edu/imp

Vacation notification: this is a special form of forwarding in which the
message is received into your INBOX, and a message (of your choosing) is
automatically returned to the sender informing him or her of your
absence. Note that your mail accumulates in your inbox while you are
away. Depending on the length of your absence, the volume of email, and
the size of email files (e.g. attachments) you receive, you may exceed
your disk quota. To enable/disable this feature, click on the "mail
forwarding" hyperlink on the Lehigh Accounts Management Web page
http://www.lehigh.edu/account

How can I customize the taskbar on my Windows 95/98 desktop?
The taskbar normally displays at the bottom of the Windows screen. You
can customize the taskbar by right-clicking on an empty portion of the
taskbar and choosing 'Properties'. Customization options include:

Always on Top: prevents the taskbar from being covered by other windows.
If this were turned off, maximizing a window would cover the taskbar.
Always on top must be enabled for Autohide to work with maximized
windows.

Autohide: this will hide the taskbar until you move the mouse pointer to
the edge of the screen containing the taskbar -- then the taskbar will
appear.

Show small icons in Start Menu: allows for the display of more options
in the Start menu

Show clock: toggles the display of the clock on and off

BLACKBOARD CourseInfo TO BE UPGRADED THIS SUMMER
The course management tool, CourseInfo (now known as Blackboard) has
been growing in popularity since Lehigh University adopted it nearly a
year ago. During this time, Information Resources has been researching
ways to increase the efficiency of the product within the computing
environment at Lehigh. During the summer, a number of Blackboard
upgrades will be performed to enhance the use and delivery of Blackboard
CourseInfo courses and materials to the campus community. The first
upgrade is planned before the first summer session and faculty training
sessions will be announced during the summer and the beginning of the
fall semester.

Since the number of courses being developed using Blackboard CourseInfo
has increased by over 30% since fall 1999, a new IBM Netfinity server is
being ordered to replace the current Blackboard CourseInfo server. This
upgrade will decrease the load on the current system, thereby increasing
its speed and efficiency. Secondly, the Blackboard CourseInfo server
operating system is being changed from AIX to LINUX. Since Blackboard
CourseInfo provides limited support for AIX systems, this change will
help expedite system upgrades as well as increase the level of support
provided by Blackboard.

Finally, the current Blackboard CourseInfo software will be upgraded
prior to the beginning of the first summer session. Even though the
user interface of the newer product is similar to the old one, there are
many enhancements to the newer version that will increase the overall
functionality of the product.

COREL WordPerfect OFFICE SUITE NEWS
This summer, Information Resources (IR) will be providing a new version
of the Corel office suite of products. Corel WordPerfect Office 2000
(standard edition) includes WordPerfect 9, Quattro Pro 9, and
Presentations 9. This suite will be licensed for 150 simultaneous users
on all IR public machines (computer labs, sites, and classrooms). These
floating licenses will also be available for network installations of
the product for use in University offices and departments.

This software will be offered under a two-year agreement similar to the
agreement under which Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 is now offered. Corel
WordPerfect Suite 8 will remain available through Wininstall until the
licenses expire which is October 31, 2000.

The Corel WordPerfect Suite continues to be available for purchase by
individuals who desire home use, or by University offices or departments
who wish local installations of the product, through the Lehigh
University Bookstore. Prices range from $36 for an office/department
license (only) to $59 for the full shrink-wrapped product.

Additional information regarding this new version is available at:
http://www.corel.com/office2000/standard.htm

IR continues to provide full support for the Microsoft Office suite,
which includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, FrontPage, and Visual
Studio. The Microsoft Campus agreement covers university-owned
microcomputers in university offices, departments, and public computing
sites. Home installation is permitted to faculty and staff, with the
exception of the Windows operating system.

SITE AND CLASSROOM UPGRADES
Beginning in May and continuing throughout the summer there will be
updates at the following computing classrooms and public sites: Mudd
464, Fritz 605, EWFM Computing Center 180, EWFM Media Center & Linderman
Media Production, Grace 28, Iacocca Hall B103, Imbt Lab B101, Lewis Labs
316, Packard 502, and Whitaker 257. A new Accounting/IR semi-public
teaching site will be created in Rauch Business Center 51 with 37 PCs
and projection capabilities. For more details on all these projects
connect to:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~lucc/operations/facilities/sitenews99.html

In addition, IR, Facilities Planning and the Deans are currently
planning to upgrade other classrooms with computing and presentation
technology. These rooms will be listed as soon as all input has been
received and details finalized.
