HELP DESK HINTS
This is a regular feature of two or three quick hints generated by staff
at the Information Resources Help Desk. A compendium of more of these
items can be found on the Help Desk FAQ (frequently asked questions)
page at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/.

Netscape Bookmark Hint
Have you ever created a bookmark for a Web page, but found that the
title given to the bookmark is either absent or not very descriptive
(e.g., "Introduction")? Bookmark titles are taken from the Web
document's HTML title tag. If the title of the document is absent,
vague, or otherwise unhelpful, you can rename the bookmark to a more
useful title:

1. Click on the Bookmarks icon on the Netscape browser
2. Choose Edit Bookmarks
3. Select/highlight the bookmark that you would like to rename.
4. From the pulldown menus across the top of the screen, select
Edit, then Bookmark properties
5. Enter the new title in the area labeled Name:
6. Click ok

Note: you can also use this to change folder names.

Need To Print a Really BIG Job?
Information Resources provides access to a networked high-speed printer
for large print jobs. This HP 8100 series printer is located in the EWFM
Computing Center, room 179. For info on how to utilize this printer,

WINDOWS 2000
You've probably been hearing a lot in the news about Windows 2000, the
latest operating system released by Microsoft. Contrary to popular
belief, Windows 2000 is NOT the next step after Windows 98; it is the
follow-up to the Windows NT operating system. At Lehigh Windows NT is
currently utilized for specialized applications and secure
functionality. IR is in the process of testing Windows 2000 viability in
our environment. We will forward more information on our testing at a
later date. At present users with Windows 95 or 98 have no need to
convert to Windows 2000. Faculty, staff and students who need to
purchase new machines should order them with Windows 98.

Microsoft is planning to release a new version of Windows 98, called
Windows Millennium Edition (ME) later this year. We will keep you
informed about developments in this area as more information is released
from Microsoft.

THE FUTURE OF THE NETWORK SERVER
In a Web-based world, the text-based interface to the Network Server is
becoming increasingly problematic. Whether it is attachments to
electronic mail (e.g., an MS-Word document included with email) or the
lack of HTML support, the text-based interface to the Network Server no
longer meets the requirements of the campus.

To remedy this problem, Information Resources will be migrating all
Network Server functions to a totally Web-based environment. The primary
impact to users of this system will be to those who use the text-based
interface of the Network Server to read email. The vast majority of
individuals at Lehigh are already using Netscape Messenger or a similar
application for email; Information Resources will be providing migration
assistance to those who have yet to make the move. It is anticipated
that text-based access to the Network Server will be removed from
service for the majority of users by the end of the year.

WIRELESS COMPUTING COMES TO LEHIGH
Information Resources has begun a pilot project to implement wireless
computing technology at Lehigh University. The pilot project was
started with a generous contribution from the parents of a Lehigh
student who were impressed with the University's WIRED program and
wanted to help further computing technology at Lehigh. It was felt that
a wireless pilot project was the best use for the technology
contribution.

Wireless computing access is just starting to become available at
universities and colleges throughout the US. A committee has been
formed within IR to implement wireless access at Lehigh. The
committee's mission is to select the wireless hardware, implement it at
selected sites and then evaluate its performance.

The primary beneficiaries of wireless access will be laptop users who
will be able to have network access when unplugged from their regular
connections. The Wireless Committee will be selecting several sites
around campus to be used in the pilot project. Priority will be given
to areas, such as libraries and common areas, where students and staff
congregate.

WIRED GROUP STUDIES IN FAIRCHILD
Need a place for your team to finish its report? Studying with
classmates for the final exam? In Fairchild Martindale Library there are
7 group study rooms for student use. Over the spring break all of these
rooms were provided with network connections to accommodate student
laptops with ethernet cards and appropriate configurations. Rooms may be
reserved up to 24 hours in advance by calling 758-4992 or by stopping by
the Circulation Desk in Fairchild. Help Desk staff will provide
instructions for configuring your laptop. There are also network
connections on the first floor of Mart wing. Laptops for short-term
in-building use are available from the Media Center in Fairchild.
