HELP DESK HINTS
This is a regular feature of two or three quick hints generated by staff
at the Information Resources Help Desk. A compendium of more of these
items can be found on the Help Desk FAQ (frequently asked questions)
page at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/.
Finding Videos in Lehigh's Catalog
The Lehigh Media Center holds a considerable collection of videos on
academic subjects as well as a number of feature films. These videos
have special circulation policies: undergraduates may not take them out
but can view them on individual equipment in the media center; graduate
students, faculty and staff have more extensive borrowing privileges.
To search the video collection, go into ASA, Lehigh's online catalog:
http://asa.lib.lehigh.edu/uhtbin/webcat. In the search box, enter
"videos and" followed by the subject; then click the 'Keywords' button
to start the search. To find feature films, search on "videos and
feature films"; users can "and" on other keywords as well, including
subjects, producers or major actors. For example:
videos and feature films and shakespeare
videos and feature films and Branagh
To browse subject collections of videos, type in "videos" in the search
box and click 'Subjects'. Scroll through the Videos--Subject listing to
find the subject desired and click on that.
1999 TAX FORMS AND GUIDES
FEDERAL TAX MATERIALS:
The U.S. Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service's web site
(http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/forms_pubs/index.html) has a well
constructed guide to obtaining downloadable and viewable copies of its
Forms, Instructions and Publications. There is also a FAQ to help with
puzzling aspects of printing and downloading. Not only are 1999 tax
materials available but so are forms and publications dating back to
1992. Finally, you can find information on the Federal "e-file" program
for electronic tax filing.
PENNSYLVANIA TAX MATERIALS
The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (http://www.revenue.state.pa.us)
makes PA tax forms and publications available from its web site. In
addition to providing downloadable forms and publications, the site
highlights information on a variety of tax questions and provides
details regarding the PA Electronic filing program.
TAX FORMS FOR OTHER STATES; ADDITIONAL TAX INFO:
TaxWeb (http://www.taxweb.com/index.html) is a consumer oriented source
for federal and state tax developments. Use this to find tax forms made
available on the web from all 50 states plus Washington DC and New York
City.
PAPER FORMS
Traditionalists can still obtain paper copies of Tax forms and
publications in a number of locations including Lehigh University's
Government Documents area, 2nd Floor, Fairchild Martindale Library, 2nd
floor, Mart Wing. (http://www.lehigh.edu/library/taxes2.htm/#tradition)
OFFICE 2000 PROFESSIONAL COMING TO A COMPUTER NEAR YOU
This summer, Information Resources will be "rolling out" Microsoft
Office 2000 Professional. This latest version of Microsoft's office
suite of products will be available at public computing sites and
classrooms, and to university departments.
Microsoft Office 2000 Professional will begin appearing at the public
computing sites and classrooms after June 1 and will be included in the
site image (a base set of programs available at all computing
facilities). Once a public site or classroom has Office 2000 installed,
Office 97 will no longer be available there.
University departments will have Microsoft Office 2000 Professional
available after July 1 via Wininstall. Microsoft Office 97 will
continue to be available to clients that already have it installed,
however, no new installations of this old version will be supported.
Microsoft Office 2000 Professional is offered to the campus under the
Microsoft Campus Agreement. Details regarding this agreement and
additional product information are available at:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~ludoc/user_services/software/sitelicense.html#MICROSOFT
Information on new features and training for Office 2000 will be
provided in the near future. Questions regarding this upgrade should be
directed to your Computing or Enterprise Information Consultant.
IEEE JOURNALS AND CONFERENCES -- IEL ONLINE
IR is pleased to announce the arrival on March 27th of the IEEE/IEE
Electronic Library. Lehigh's subscription to the IEL covers all IEEE
journals, magazines, and transactions, plus a subset of the conferences,
full-text (PDF) back to 1988. Publications may be browsed by title or
searched by concept (simple and advanced search structures). Journal
articles appear before the print versions; conferences appear shortly
after their print equivalents. Letters to the editors, product reviews,
and paper submission guidelines are also included: everything but the
ads, folks! For the IEEE/IEE publications that aren't included in this
subscription, abstracts are provided. Access is by IP authorization; no
passwords to remember. In the next few weeks, IR staff will be adding
links to journal and conference titles in ASA, the online catalog. In
the meantime, give it a try at http://www.ieee.org/ieeexplore.
CALL YOUR LIBRARIAN
The Web has made the sharing of scholarly and professional resources
both more convenient and more complex. Lehigh librarians can evaluate
Web resources, provide library research skills classes or produce
course-specific Web pages
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/guides/guides.html identifying key
resources. Visit
http://www.lehigh.edu/library/services/consult.html for details.
IR SERVICE REQUESTS ON THE WEB
Need to reserve media equipment? Want a book through Interlibrary loan?
Having a problem with your phone? The new IR Web site includes a
REQUEST button in the left hand margin of every page. Click it and find
all IR Web forms for services gathered together in a single spot
(http://www.lehigh.edu/ir/requests/). Comments on particular forms or
suggestions for new forms are always welcome at
(http://www.lehigh.edu/ir/requests/problem.html).
CORRUPT FILES OR DISK? CALL THE HELP DESK
If you have a corrupt file or disk, the Help Desk may be able to help
you recover the data. Using Norton Utilities for Windows 95/98, staff
will attempt to recover data on diskettes or zip disks. Although this
service comes with no guarantee, IR has had some success recovering
data. To make an appointment with a consultant, call 758-HELP. For more
information about the availability and parameters of the service, see
this URL: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/datarecovery.html
