HELP DESK HINTS
This is a regular feature of two or three quick hints generated by staff
at the Information Resources Help Desk. These are items that come to
their attention regularly. The "Hints" are answers to questions,
shortcuts to help you work more efficiently, or clarifications that will
benefit many faculty, staff or students. A compendium of more of these
items can be found on the Help Desk FAQ (frequently asked questions)
page at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/.

TIP #1: When your word processor, spreadsheet, or other software will
not read a file.

1. Make sure that the document has the proper file extension. For
example, MS WORD documents should have .doc appended to the filename you
assign.

2. If the file is on a diskette or zip disk, try copying it to the hard
drive before attempting to open it.

3. Try opening the file from within the application:
    a. Start the application as if you were going to create a new
document.
    b. Try to open the document. In most applications, you'll go under
the "File" menu and select "Open."
    c. Within the "Open" dialog box, you may need to change the drive
and/or directory being viewed in order to find the file.
    d. Select the file and click on "Open" (or, double-click on the
file).

Tip #2: Using Diskettes and Other Removable Media

With applications programs unable to distinguish the exact media used (a
floppy disk, a Zip or Jaz disk or a Superdisk) and other environmental
hazards abounding, there can be problems in the use of removable,
writable, magnetic media.
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/diskettes.html gives a quick
overview of "do's" and "don'ts" that will help you steer clear of any
complications.

WEB COOKIES: A PRIMER
Cookies?
There's been a lot of discussion lately about Web 'cookies' and whether
they are safe. An increasing number of Lehigh and IR online resources
require your Web browser to accept cookies. If you are worried about
privacy issues, look at
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/cookies.html for more info.

ANNUAL REVIEWS ONLINE
All 19 Lehigh Annual Review subscriptions are now online and linked by
individual title from the ASA catalog! Among the 19 are such titles as
the Annual Review of Anthropology, Annual Review of Psychology, and the
Annual Review of Biophysics and Biomolecular Structure. In addition to
the latest volumes, the service also includes a backfile of several
years. Annual Reviews Online provides access to full text articles, PDF
versions and bibliographies, with Medline abstracts of references where
available. Readers can also launch searches for related articles in
PubMed as well as links to other High Wire Press Journal articles.
Always excellent starting points for graduate and upper level
undergraduate library research projects, the Annual Reviews show promise
as a fine tool for the digital library environment.

PROXY ACCESS TO DATABASES AND ELECTRONIC JOURNALS
Many of Lehigh's Web electronic resources are restricted to use by
computers on the Lehigh campus or to users of the Lehigh dial-up modem
pool. To accommodate users dialing in from off-campus using a non-Lehigh
Internet Service Provider (NuNet, EnterNet, Fastnet, etc.) and still
satisfy vendor limits on access, a Lehigh Proxy Server
(http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/guides/proxy.html) has been set up. Any
student, faculty, or staff member who has a valid Lehigh user ID (AFS
account) and password may use the Proxy server. Setup instructions are
available for several different browsers. The Databases list
(http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/databases/index.html) accessible from the
Library Services Web page indicates which databases are available
through the proxy server; all electronic journal services
(http://www.lehigh.edu/library/ejournals/ejournalpub.html) are proxied.

COMPUTER VIRUSES: ARE YOU PROTECTED?
Most of us know of someone who's had the misfortune of receiving a
computer virus. Maybe that someone was you! How can you protect
yourself from getting viruses and keep from spreading them to others?
Find out by looking at http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/qa/viruses.html
for more information. You may also want to look at
http://www.lehigh.edu/security, where you can download software for your
off-campus PC.
