HELP DESK HINTS
This issue of IR Digest inaugurates a new regular feature--two or three
quick hints generated by staff at the Information Resources Help Desk.
These will be items that come to their attention regularly. The "Hints"
will be answers to questions, shortcuts to help you work more
efficiently, or clarifications that will benefit many faculty, staff or
students. A compendium of more of these items can be found on the Help
Desk FAQ (frequently asked questions) page at:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/faq/.

How can I view the quota and usage for my Network Server and AFS disk
spaces?

You can do this via the Web:
1. From your Web browser, go to the URL: http://www.lehigh.edu/account/.
Note: this page has other options for managing your account.
2. You will be prompted for your 4-letter userid and password.
3. A page of account maintenance options is displayed. Click on the Disk
Quotas link.
4. View the results. Read the explanatory text to help you assess your
disk usage. Call the Help desk at 8-HELP if you have questions.

ASA offers Web Self Service

Want to see what books you've checked out from the library? Place a
recall on an item? Renew an item? You can do this, and more, on the Web
through the ASA Self Services Menu. The clickable link ( Self Services )
in the upper right-hand corner of ASA lets you do the following:

- Check Your Status -- shows items on hold, checked out, overdue, etc.
- Renew Your Charged Out Items -- renew most books over the Web
- Recall an Item -- request that a checked out book be recalled and held
for you
- Request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) -- online version of our printed
form
- Request an Item Purchase -- your request is forwarded to the
appropriate librarian subject specialist

Try it out at: http://asa.lib.lehigh.edu/uhtbin/webcat. Note that there
are some limits on renewals and recalls. Contact the circulation desk at
8-3070 if you have any problems or questions.

NEW CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY WEB PAGE
Need to know what technology is available in a classroom, site or lab
you may be using? A recently redesigned IR Technology Classroom Web site
makes it easy to find out all the details quickly. Included are Public &
Department PC and Workstation Sites, High Technology Classrooms, PC
Hands-on Classrooms, and VCR Classrooms. Arranged by building and then
by type of facility, a click or two gets you information on:
--availability
--hardware
--printing
--name of operational contact person if appropriate
--how to operate equipment
--common problems

Please take a look at:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~lucc/operations/facilities/

NEW DEALS ON PURCHASING A COMPUTER
Information Resources and Gateway Computers have negotiated a special
purchase price for several specific configurations of the Gateway
E-Series tower model and the Solo laptop model for the Spring semester.
Gateway will honor this offer for all Lehigh departmental orders
(pricing may be revised monthly). This offer does not pertain to
individual (personal) purchases and must be made through the Office of
University Purchasing as usual. (See
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inmic/dept/gwdeal.html for specifics on the
Gateway deal, or visit the Purchasing a Computer Web page at
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inmic.)

NEW SEMINAR: Using the Web Wisely: How to Evaluate Web-based Information

Date/Time: March 1 and March 22, 9:10am-11:00am

If you do Web research for your coursework or profession, you've
probably encountered a site that contains "doubtful data." How can you
figure out if information is credible or spurious? This seminar provides
a systematic approach to evaluating Web sites and resources. Web search
tools that help filter out questionable sites are also discussed. To
register for this seminar go to:
http://www.lehigh.edu/ir/irhelp/ir_seminars.html

FREE ISPs
Free Internet service providers can be used to supplement Lehigh's modem
pool service, which is limited to 4 hours per day. Free ISPs provide Web
browsing and email service at no cost; in exchange, you provide
demographic/geographic information to the company and use banner
software which displays ads while you browse. Check out
http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inhelp/faq/qa/freeisps.html

NEW! LINK TO FULL-TEXT ARTICLES FROM YOUR WEB PAGE
Enhance your home page or course page with ProQuest "durable links" to
full-text resources. Using this new feature, you can set up a link to a
journal article or results of an online database search for colleagues
or students. For a demo, go to:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inhelp/proquest.html

CHANGING YOUR VOICE MAIL GREETING FROM HOME
During this time of year, when you may not be able to make it into the
office because of inclement weather, it is helpful to understand how to
change your voice mail greeting from home. It will help for callers to
know your schedule so they are not expecting to receive a call back
when you really aren't in the office! Even if you are going to be late,
you can still record a greeting from home telling callers that you won't
be in the office first thing in the morning. For more information and
instructions on how to access your voice mail from home, and how to
change your greetings, please visit our Web site at
http://www.lehigh.edu/~intel/vmmain.html.

ERIC DOCUMENTS IN ELECTRONIC FORM 1996 TO PRESENT
ERIC documents are now accessible in digital format from the library.
Eighty percent of ERIC documents produced since 1996 are included in the
new ERIC Document Reproduction Service's E*Subscribe service, with the
remainder restricted by contributors to microfiche release. These
documents from the U.S. Department of Education ERIC system are key
academic materials, representing a broad range of literature in
education and related fields. ERIC documents are collected by the
sixteen ERIC Clearinghouses around the US. They can be conference
papers, curriculum guides, research reports or publications for parents.

The EDRS E*Subscribe service is linked from several places on the
libraries' Web site. It is linked from the library Databases page
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/databases/index.html as ERIC Document
Reproduction Service--Electronic. It's also featured on the Education
page on InfoDome, A Research Advisor,
http://www.lehigh.edu/library/infodome/educationsearch.html.

CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS SciFinder NOW 24/7

What better way to ring in the new millennium than to go electronic? We
have taken advantage of an extraordinary offer from Chemical Abstracts
Service to provide site-wide access for all users to SciFinder Scholar.

SciFinder is a user-friendly access to the complete Chemical Abstracts
database, back to 1967. It not only makes searching by text and by
structures easy, but it links to full-text services via IP
authorization. For academic libraries, CAS has agreed to trade the
paper copy subscription for 24/7 electronic access, plus discounts on
the STN (command-level searching) and FirstSearch interfaces. Now all
levels of users, from sophomore chemistry students to seasoned
researchers, can have appropriate access to one of the premier
bibliographic services.

The SciFinder software may be wininstalled at any public site in less
than a minute or downloaded from our informational page
(http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~incast/scifinder/). Windows and Mac versions
are available; the Users Manual is also available as a PDF file.
