TELEPHONE, LAN, VOICE MAIL WORK ORDER REQUEST FORMS NOW ON WEB
Faculty and staff may now submit telephone and LAN work orders via the
web at http://www.lehigh.edu/~intel/workorder.html. Please note that
this form should not be used to request repairs; as usual, please call
TLINE (x.85463) to report phone problems and contact your IR computing
consultant for help with LAN problems. Faculty and staff can also
request voice mail via the web at
http://www.lehigh.edu/~intel/vmmain.html.

NEW SOFTWARE ACQUISITIONS by Doris Oravec
During each academic year, the Software Advisory Committee reviews many
requests for software. This committee has a limited budget available
for the purchase of software that will be used by the academic
community. A complete list of the PC and workstation software approved
by this committee during the past year is available at:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~ludoc/user_services/software/new/newsoft98-99.html

Y2K: ARE YOU READY? by Stacey Alderfer
Information Resources is offering a seminar titled "Y2K: What you can
do. This seminar will discuss hardware testing and its results,

CONGRESSIONAL QUARTERLY LIBRARY ADDED TO VIRTUAL LIBRARY DATABASES
CQ Weekly on the Web at http://libraryip.cq.com focuses on American
politics and the activities of Congress. The Web version includes
access to the full text of all articles published since 1983. Past
articles may be searched by topic, date, bill number, committee name
or other criteria, and there is a searchable archive of floor votes.

The CQ Researcher at http://libraryip.cq.com is a weekly publication
offering quick and reliable information, bibliographies and links to
additional resources on a range of hot issues. The service is
especially useful for undergraduates requiring an accessible and
authoritative source for a speech or brief essay. Some recent examples
of topics include hospital finances, medical marijuana, the global
refugee crisis, boys emotional needs, and endangered rain forests.
Users may browse through articles in the current issue or search for
past articles using words, dates or other criteria. CQ Weekly on the Web
and CQ Researcher online replace the print services of the same name.

NEW ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIAS
In addition to the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online at
http://www.eb.com:180/, Lehigh has recently added the online versions of
the Encyclopedia Americana and the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia
(http://www.lehigh.edu/~inref/databases/grolier.html). The online
versions of these reference works combine authoritative information and
currency for all levels of academic users. Articles are richly augmented
by illustrations, maps, audio and video clips. An important feature is
extensive hyperlinking to related articles, and links to additional Web
sites that have been selected, rated and reviewed for their value to
researchers. Special features from the Americana include the Americana
Journal, a searchable database of current event news items compiled
weekly and illustrated with AP photographs, and the Wall Street Almanac
complete with articles, tables and graphs. Contact Kathe Morrow at kem6
or 83041.

ACADEMIC UNIVERSE (LEXIS-NEXIS)
On August 20, 1999 a newly designed version of the LEXIS-NEXIS Academic
Universe product was released to subscribers. This redesign includes a
variety of new features. The most sought after change is the enhanced
searching option that allows a search to be conducted in the full-text
of the contents rather than limited to the Headline- Lead Paragraph
fields.

The entire product has a new look and feel. You will discover that
research categories have been collapsed into five major areas: News,
Business, Legal research, Medical and Reference in an effort to be less
confusing. This interface also provides the ability to link seamlessly
to the Congressional Universe sister product for researching
Congressional Information.

Other enhancements include additional content for legal materials
including U.S. patents, European Union legal information, state
attorneys general opinions and assorted Martindale-Hubbell publications.
Legal information researchers will appreciate the ability to search for
case law citations across levels of courts or geographic districts.
Many users will also be pleased to be able to E-mail search result
citations to yourself or to even E-mail single documents in full-text
version directly from the product.

To try out this newly enhanced LEXIS-NEXIS product specifically designed
for the academic community, connect to
http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe or find it on the Library Services
Web page under Databases. Contact Roseann Bowerman at rb04 or 83053.

ACM PUBLICATIONS ONLINE
The recently-acquired ACM Digital Library provides any Lehigh user, on
or off campus, access to full-text [Adobe Acrobat PDF files] of all the
ACM journals/transactions since 1991. As we write, ACM is converting
more articles, so that coverage will eventually begin with 1985. Through
ASA, the online catalog, users can link directly to specific ACM
journals, scan them year-by-year, and view/print individual articles.
Alternatively, users can go to the ACM Digital Library site at
http://www.acm.org/dl/Search.html and search the entire collection by
author, title, publication, keywords, or ACM categories. The ACM
publications are obviously of particular interest to those in computer
science/engineering, but are also useful for those working in business
management, security, and graphics design. Speaking of graphics: the
full-color illustrations are part of the package. Contact Sharon Siegler
at sls7 or 83068.

SCIENCE DIRECT EXTENDS ACCESS TO ELSEVIER JOURNALS
>From early 1998 through August 31, 1999, Lehigh was an enthusiastic
participant in the University of Michigan's PEAK program, which offered
electronic access journals published by Elsevier Science, the world's
largest science publisher. This program continues with Elsevier's
ScienceDirect.

Science Direct offers unlimited electronic full text access to all
titles to which Lehigh holds print subscriptions and includes limited
desktop document delivery of articles from additional Elsevier titles.
Selected links to PEAK journals in the ASA catalog have been replaced
with ScienceDirect links. Seminars for faculty and graduate students on
ScienceDirect will be offered on November 3 and 9 (seminar signup:
http://www.lehigh.edu/ir/irhelp/ir_seminars.html). Contact Christine
Roysdon at cmr0 or 83049.

Send your comments or suggestions for future topics by replying directly
to the list.
