IRDIGEST - September 3, 1999 - Lehigh University Information Resources CONTENTS -IR SEMINAR LIST -PC PURCHASE & REPAIR -OFFICE SUITE GONE FROM WIRED PROGRAM -CHANGES IN THE PUBLIC SITES & THE SITE "DESKTOP" Subscription, archive and contact information are at the bottom of this digest. IR SEMINAR LIST LUIR's Fall 1999 Seminar Schedule is now on-line. Printed copies of the schedule are in the process of being distributed to all faculty and staff offices. Advance registration is required for all seminars; registration requests can be made by using the on-line registration system available as topic "IRREG" on the Network Server or via the web by going to the following URL: http://www.lehigh.edu/ir/irhelp/ir_seminars.html. IRREG also contains the descriptions indicating what material will be covered, the pace, and any prerequisites. Please refer to the descriptions to determine if you meet the prerequisites before registering for seminars. As in the past, should it turn out that you are unable to attend a seminar for which you have registered, please call ext. 83990 to cancel your reservation. PC PURCHASE & REPAIR Information Resources (IR) is pleased to extend its computer repair service to faculty and staff who own their own computers. The IR technicians are qualified to repair Gateway, Dell, Apple and IBM (not Aptiva) computers. Repair and installation services for privately owned systems are limited to hardware manufactured within the past four years. This service will be done as time permits, i.e. Lehigh-owned equipment will receive priority. If you require hardware services, call the Help Desk (8HELP/84357) or your Computing Consultant to open a Service Request. Please see the web page below for details on bringing your computer in for service, status requests, rates, policies, and payment: http://www.lehigh.edu/~lucc/operations/ir_maint.html. Once more Dell and Gateway are extending system packages offered to Lehigh students to Lehigh departments and to faculty and staff for personal purchase. We call these offerings to your attention because they are quality machines for very reasonable prices. Packages include 17 inch monitors, 8.4 GB hard drives, 450 MHz Pentium III processors, 17/40x CD-ROM drives, and more for under $1400. Please read the details for departmental and personal purchases under Purchasing a Computer on the IR web pages at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inmic/purchase.html. OFFICE SUITE GONE FROM WIRED PROGRAM by Doris Oravec As of July 1, 1999, Lehigh no longer has a license to offer Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint) to WIRED participants. Previously, those in WIRED had access to approximately 200 licenses of Office through the local area networks. Unfortunately, the rights to run this software on a network (shared or concurrent use rights) expired and are no longer offered by Microsoft. Lehigh does participate in a "Microsoft Campus Agreement." Although this agreement does not include computers owned by students, it does include the computers at public computing sites. This fall, all students will have access to Microsoft Office 97 at the public sites. CHANGES IN THE PUBLIC SITES & THE SITE "DESKTOP" by Doug Reese Welcome Back! This article attempts to gather together news about the various changes that have taken place over the summer. We believe that users will ultimately find that most of the changes will simplify their use of IR computing facilities, and enable them to do things they weren't able to do before but they do require some adjustments. Contact the Help Desk at 8-HELP with questions about these or any other changes. The most notable changes are as follows: * Several public sites and classrooms have been upgraded with new computer equipment. These include the Rauch Business Center public sites, Maginnes 470, Fairchild-Martindale Computing Center 292, and all lecture classrooms. Details can be found on the Lehigh web at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~lucc/operations/facilities/sitenews99.html * All IR public sites and classrooms have been upgraded to Windows 98. * Students, faculty, and staff now need to use their own LAN account to log in at public sites. This makes it possible to provide each user with the personal resources he or she uses. This is one facet of a larger set of changes, that together will make it easier for Lehigh users to fully utilize computers at different locations. It does also mean that users will have to be careful to remember to log out when they are finished. * As part of the process of logging in and logging out, there are some changes on the PC desktop, and in the handling of files. There are fewer icons cluttering the desktop, and desktop documents and user mail are cleaned up when the user logs out. There is a common scratch space available for storing files temporarily (and moving them from one PC to another), which can be found under the Windows Start menu. A summary of the various features of this new environment, and how to make use of them, can be found at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~ludoc/guide/publicsiteguide/siteguide.html * Non-Lehigh users are now prevented from using services that are supposed to be restricted to only Lehigh students, faculty, and staff. This will help ensure access to the people who are supposed to have it. * Kiosk stations are available to provide access to library services for both Lehigh and non-Lehigh users. * Duplex printing (printing on both sides of the page) is now available at EWFM Library and Computing Center. This is the default. It can be turned off when needed (such as for printing theses), by unchecking the box in the Print dialog that says "Print on both sides." * Users can now open and manage their accounts easily via the web. You can change your password, check your disk quotas, set up mail forwarding or vacation mail processing, and more. The web pages are: http://www.lehigh.edu/open and http://www.lehigh.edu/account. * Users who wish to do so may easily synchronize their AFS and LAN passwords, thereby avoiding the necessity of remembering two passwords and knowing which to use when. If you use the web interface to change your passwords, this is automatic. * Users are strongly encouraged to use IMAP for their electronic mail; it is the default at public sites. IMAP makes it possible to read your mail and manage all of your folders from many different sites. Documentation on IMAP can be found at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~ludoc/seminar/imap/usingimap.pdf. * Centrally-stored user profiles via roaming access make using Netscape at various locations easier. Your mail configuration, bookmarks, address books, and other preferences move with you wherever you go. Roaming is enabled by default whenever you use Netscape at a public site. Documentation is at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~ludoc/seminar/imap/roaming.pdf.
