NETWORK CHANGES FOR FALL by Blair Bernhardt
Beginning in the Fall semester, Information Resources will be making a
number of changes to provide enhanced capabilities and enhanced security
of network and computing resources. These changes include:

- Logins Required for Computers on IR Networks - each student will need
to open a LAN account in order to use IR public site computers or access
the LAN through the WIRED residential networking project. The LAN
account name (and password) will be the same as the AFS account for each
student. Faculty and staff will be able to use their existing LAN
accounts to log into IR public site microcomputers.

- Synchronization of Passwords - LAN and AFS passwords will be
synchronized. It will no longer be necessary to either manually
synchronize passwords or to remember different passwords for LAN access
and access to e-mail, the Network Server, or the compute servers.
Student accounts will be synchronized upon creation of each student's
LAN account. A Web interface is being created to allow faculty and staff
to synchronize these passwords and to allow everyone to change these
passwords once synchronized.

- Remote Access to E-mail - roaming profiles will be implemented to
allow public site access to e-mail through Netscape Messenger. Address
books, mail preferences, and mail messages will be stored remotely to
allow access to e-mail through Netscape's graphical user interface from
any IR public site microcomputer.

Remote access to e-mail is just the beginning. In addition to enhanced
network and computing security, these changes provide a base upon which
new services can be provided. Watch for future announcements.

IMAP AT LEHIGH UNIVERSITY by Sandy Edmiston
Often faculty and staff need to read their email from various locations
such as from home and office. Logging into the network server allows you
to access your mail from any location, but does not support attachments
or Web URLs. POP (Post Office Protocol), used by mail programs such as
Netscape, allows you to read and send attachments and launch web URLs.
However, it stores mail local to your computer's
hard drive and not on a server so you cannot access your mail from
another location. IMAP (the Internet Message Access Protocol) is a
newer standard for email in which all of your mail is stored on a
central server and is easy to access from any location. Currently,
Netscape 4.0 and higher are IMAP compatible. Detailed information on
configuring Netscape 4.0x and 4.5 for IMAP is available in PDF format.
PDF files can be read by using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Faculty and staff
should contact their computing consultant for assistance. Student use of
IMAP is not recommended at this time but may be available next year.

usingimap.

SCANNING MATERIAL by Elia Schoomer and Steve Lichak
Scanning flat artwork for printing, web pages, or presentation graphics
begins with a few simple choices. The first web page below offers basic
guidelines and suggestions for scanning documents or slides. A link to a
PDF document on how to scan through PhotoShop is also provided.

GETTING VOICE MAIL "ENVELOPE" INFORMATION by Monica Herrera
Did you ever receive a voice mail message and you were unsure what time
the message came in or who left the message? It's easy to find out!
Anytime during message review, or right after the message is played,
you can press 5. The voice mail system will tell you the time and date
the message was received, the length of the message, and the mailbox
number of the person who left the message. If it was from a person who
does not have voice mail, or the call was from off campus, the system
will tell you it was from an "outside caller". This feature is called
"Envelope Information". For additional Voice Mail Hints & Tips please
refer to the Voice Mail Frequently Asked Questions page at:

ENGLISH SHORT TITLE CATALOG (ESTC) by Christine Roysdon
The English Short Title Catalogue 1473-1800 on CD-ROM, issued at the end
of last year by the British Library is available in the Reading Room,
Linderman Library. The catalog lists works printed in any language in
England or its dependencies from the beginning of printing through the
end of the eighteenth century, as well as works printed in English
anywhere else in the world during that period from materials processed
up to December 1997. The ESTC now includes not only the former
Eighteenth-Century Short-Title Catalogue, but also the short-title
catalogues covering 1475-1640 (Pollard & Redgrave) and 1641-1700 (Wing).

100baset network - The new computers in these facilities will be
connected to a switching Ethernet 100baset hubs which provide a
non-shared 10MB connection per systems. This network will be connected
to the gigabit backbone network (1000baset) which will also be under
development this summer. All systems will be a Pentium 400 with 17"
