I can understand the situation with the kids. Been there. :-) My kids are basically grown. My daughter is in college. My son is 20. When they were younger we would go hiking about every Sunday afternoon in the summer. I would have never been able to work then either. My son goes up with me some times but he will take my dog off for a couple hours and continue hiking while I operate. My dog doesn't like to sit while I operate either. He's worse then a kid. He will sit there and whine. When he is in the mountains he likes to hike. not sit under a tree. :-) I think also part of the problem is that most hams are very narrow in their interests. I am the only ham in this entire area who likes other things besides ham radio. Well there is one other. We go mountain biking together. This summer I hope to get him into QRP with me on the trail. He is 24 years old. I tell what now. You learn real fast just how old 45 is when you are chasing a 24 year old up the side of a mountain on a trail on a bike. :-) Seems all most hams are interested in is going to work and sitting in the shack. I think the young ones grew up with computers and video games and have developed little interests in physical activities. If they cant drive there then they ain't a go'na go. :-) Probably why the younger generation is so out of shape. At least that seems to be the case in these parts. I have always liked Spelunking, Backpacking, Mountain biking, scuba diving, flying and rock climbing as well as ham radio. I wish I had gotten into qrp years ago. I can do that with my biking and packing. Its nice when you can combine a couple of your activities together. I am going to try the K1 in a Cessna 172 as an aeronautical mobile some day. I figure a long wire run the length of the plane attached underneath with some sort of stand off should load nice for 20M with the K1's auto tuner. I may have a problem however with ignition noise. I didn't get the K1 with a noise blanker. I'll have to get with a friend of mine who is also a pilot and see what we can come up with for standoffs. Knowing Mike it will involve Duct Tape. :-) We have duct taped pieces of planes together with it before flying. No really critical parts though. :-) We aren't quite as wild as we used to be. Some of the things we used to do in planes years ago it is a wonder we are still alive. Fantastic levels of pucker factor leading to some really Great adrenaline rushes though. :-) Maybe we could take a plane and start in NC and fly above the trail up through Md. making contacts.I think the rules say as long as you are within 100 ft of the trail ?????? Would that count Ron. :-) Oh well hopefully some others will get motivated to go to the trail in some other states. Like you I am afraid that the award will die out for lack of on trail participation. There seem to be plenty of hams interested in the award you get by talking to those of us on the trail but none who want to go out on the trail. I would like to get the award for working all states "to" the trail. At 06:48 PM 12/2/01 +0000, Larry Cahoon wrote: >Daryl, > >Ron is up on the trail all the time.
