Our operators do much more than just operate and monitor the
mainframe. They make changes to job parameters and dates, select
jobs to be run at various times during the semester, and write and run
simple queries which often requires the writing of SORT parameters.
They inspect printed output for correctness and decide who to call
if it doesn't look right. Most reports are DISP=K in case they
have to be reprinted. The operators decide when to delete these
reports from the POWER Queues.
They scan forms like tests, grade reports, surveys, elections, etc.
They keep inventory of supplies and decide when to order
pre-printed forms so they will be available when needed.
The least of their duties is mounting tapes and staring at the
console.
