A few years ago, we upgraded the microcode on our MP 3000. After that, I
was no longer able to use EXTRA! for Windows for a TN3270 client when the
TN3270 sever was the gateway built into the MP 3000. Fortunately, our main
TN3270 client, QWS3270 Plus, continued to work, but as soon as it opens a
session and the gateway allocates it one of the non-SNA LU's, we get the
following VTAM message.
IST446I I/O ERROR E85, UNKNOWN ERROR, 05,0E00,00
Because it has caused no other problems, I have never pursued trying to get
rid of it.
I can't really offer you any solutions to your problem other than the
obvious one of dumping PCOM and replacing it with BlueZone, but it is
interesting that the MP 3000 is not IBM's only line of machines to have
this problem in their TN3270 server implementations.
One suggestion is that you may want to have the z9 microcode upgraded
and/or open a problem against the z9 hardware for this problem.

ICC TN3270 Disconnect
Please respond to
vse-l@Lehigh.EDU
I am currently moving to a z9 utilizing the OSA-ICC for my TN3270 sessions
on zVSE 4.1 for my users. There seems to be an issue with PCOM during a
disconnect from the system, or more accurately, during a reconnection to
the system. VTAM will frequently post an I/O error against the device (a
local attached non-SNA 3270) and vary it inactive. Of course, as far as
the ICC is concerned there isn't any problem but the port becomes unsuable
until a vary active command is issued to VTAM. Curious enough this appears
to happen frequently with PCOM but not always. I also tested BlueZone and
could not get it to cause the same error condition. So, has anyone
experienced this, and do you have any work arounds or tweaks that
eliminates the issue? Thanks.
