Hello Dave (and Billy),

I am in the middle of a project to go 'tapeless'. And I am
asking all those questions.

From the five companies I am getting information from

1) All have ESCON or FICON connected systems that have consoles
that allow you to IPL from the z890 (what we have now) HMC from the
virtual tape. You mount the virtual tape you want on the virtual drive
and tell the z890 IPL from 'here'.

2)	We are using CA-EPIC. Most have a job that will run
continuously monitoring for mount messages that get sent to the VTS
controller and mount the 'tape'. Operator intervention is cut down.

There are z/VM REXX that will do the same functions.

3) Backup to some other device or copy to another device is
available. How it is done is dependent upon the system.

4) Costs are costs (you get what you pay for).

I took Monday off. I have convinced myself that tapeless is the
way to go. Now to get there.

Hi Billy,

You have any idea what they cost?

Where is your remote device located? What do you plan to do in case of
a 'disaster'?

Dave,

I don't know what a 3592 cartridge cost, but why not go 'tapeless'. Get
a virtual Tape Server. I'm running SecureAgent's SDS unit and it's
serving me good. No tapes and it copies the file, once it's created, to
a remote device.
