I recall back in the 1990s seeing local news stories about an equipment upgrade at the FAA. The story specifically mentioned that they were upgrading to IBM 3083/9083 machines. I remember scratching my head over the "upgrade" since we were well into the lifetime of ES/9000 class machines. The articles referenced in Ken's post mention the Hampton, GA facility. Coincidentally my parents live very near that facility and I have driven by it many times. My father-in-law was an air traffic controller at the Hampton facility until he retired, having been smart enough to not be a striker under the Reagan administration.
