Hello Mohammed,
I understand your concern. That is why I would start a DASD help ticket
that you are planning the microcode upgrade.
Hardware support will as permission to remote in and check out the
DS6800 for any anomalies.
I have been told that the major problems are with the actual download to
the staging area.
Finally, Support will indicate if there are any hits against the
microcode levels.

I have the information on upgrade from the IBM manuals and it seems to
be vaguely straight forward. I am a bit concerned about the back out
plan, in case if something doesn't work the way it is supposed or the
sequence of upgrade I followed that was not right, etc.

I have done two microcode upgrades. Both done when I
had plenty of time, during the time changes.
Plus start a IBM Helpdesk ticket ahead of time. They will ask if they
can remote in and review your ds6800 for any other issues.
We had multiple interface cards. Each will drop as the
microcode is applied.
You can download the microcode before you plan to do the
actual upgrade. I had everything ready to go ahead of time.
Backout is something I have never heard you can do on the 6800. It has
to work.

Subject: Microcode update.
Hi,
This would be my first experience on microcode upgrade. I thought I
would tap your experience if anyone of you had done at your storage
DS6800.
I am way behind the current available release of Version 6.2.2.136. I am
currently at Version 5.2.0.1942.
According to IBM website, in order to catch up with the current release,
I've to first upgrade to intermediate version 6.0.700.22 before the
current available Version 6.2.2.136. Any thought on this.
I know the download package contains 3 files, viz. 1. DS6000 microcodes,
2. DS6000 SMC and 3. DSCLI.
What would be sequence of upgrades like?
Is there any back out plan if the microcode upgrade fails?
As always sharing your experience is always appreciated.
