We may have some really old phases left from the FCOBOL days, but I just don't
know for sure. They purchased some package stuff over 20 years ago that
still hasn't gone away.

I believe STRING and UNSTRING are OK as long as you are using Cobol II or
Cobol for VSE/ESA.  It is only under "old Cobol" where there were unsafe. 
(No, I can't quote any manuals on that at the moment.)  I use STRING all of
the time in CICS programs, and UNSTRING often enough.
