HI Allan, we had a pair of these 3490-E11 tape drives ( each with an
with integrated tape loader too!), which we attached to a RS/6000 H70,
(via scsi attachment natch). We used them to read in our z/series
mainframe's 3480 log tapes. ( masses of them!) . we had no particular
problem apart from the ebcdic/ascii issues for character data. As I
recall the 3490-E11's were really great( and fast). I think we wrote all
of the code ourselves to decipher the z/series ebcdic data. I do not
know whether there is any native OS/400 assistance to be had here vis a
vis an I/series understanding z/series data. I know we did not use any
AIX assistance for the P/series( er... RS/6000) if there was any.
FWIW,

I do know the SCSI 3490-E11 tape drive I purchased for my flex box came
off an iSeries. And that the manuals that came with it talk about
iSeries attachment requirements.

I no longer use it and would sell it to you, but the shipping would be
out of sight to your location.

mainframe into the iSeries especially as a lot of the Historical data is
on tape and the file transfer system is being a bit flaky at the moment
