Dear friend, 
Regarding the patristic exegesis and the various meanings it saw in the
biblical text see a new and really good book in German: 

Michael Fiedrowicz, Theologie der Kirchenväter, Grundlagen frühchristlicher
Glaubensreflexion, Herder Verlag 2007.

While writing a paper about the allegorical and typological exegesis of
Exodus in the Church Father I came across it and I think that it offers a
thorough and well-documented presentation of the various exegetical
tendencies / approaches in the patristic literature up to the 5th century.
