I don't think it is about leavign the bottle open.  Once you open the
bottle, it has some sort of interaction with the air, and starts to degrade.
After a certain amount of time, the degradation renders it useless.  kind of
like the "use before" dates on milk, or other perishable items.

(I just looked at my test solution for my Freestyle unit, and it expired two
days ago.  Time to go to my pharmacy and order up a new  bit of the
solution.  I wonder how much it will cost.)
